I posted this in another chat board...but since all you cool cats are over here...thought maybe I'd run it past you guys for some suggestions......

Anyone have any suggestions on a decent cd/dvd label printer?

We're getting into promoting our slideshows and would like to get a printer that prints directly on to the cd and dvd's instead of those stick-on labels.

I've seen some all-in-ones that have the capability, including the Epson Stylus Photo R220....but we already have a pretty good all in one printer.

Then I've seen some stand alones from Casio, but their dpi is very low compared to the Epson.

Anyone have any experience with these items??

Thanks!!!!!

If you're interested but HP has some technology called "Light Scribe (http://www.lightscribe.com/)" which actually burns the label on to the CD in the drive itself. I've never used it but also haven't heard any bad things about it.

A printer is pretty much a printer once you look at the tech specs (DPI PPM) stuff like that you're pretty well set. I will say I used to have an Epson printed and it worked great until I dropped it out a window.

Stick-on labels are cheap, flimsy and often get stuck in people's drives you're going the right way getting a printer.

If you are really interested in going pro... consider a thermal injet printer, which produces a better looking image: http://www.vjgear.com/proddetail.php?prod=Rimage_360i&cat=17 (little pricy though)

The Lightscribe does look nice...but my dvd burner doesn't have the technology in it....and I just bought it not that long ago and have only used it once or twice...so I don't really want to get a new one right now....but thanks for the info!!

A LOT pricey!!! The amount of use wouldn't justify the cost....but thanks for the input!

In that case, we use clear labels and sure thing cd/DVD labeler for all of our projects, just masage the final graphic from photoshop as a JPG and were set.

I think you can get them from www.polylinecorp.com (http://www.polyline.com) don't quote me, they have prob the best wholesale price and quality for the buck.

I looked around a bit and found there was a big hole in the lineup. There seem to be those around $100, 200 dpi printers, some of which only print one color at a time - .10 to .40 cents per disk. There was the Epson you spoke of (that looks pretty good by comparison). Then there are the WOW, how much? printers that run one to three thousand.

The Epson R300? had the same stats but improved photo printing was fairly highly rated by PC magazine.

Good luck

This may be more trouble than it's worth, but it might be of interest.

My Epson printer died a few months back, so I was in search of a new one. I settled on the Canon iP5200. What a kick ass printer!

During my research I learned that the Europeon version of this printer has cd/dvd printing capability:

http://www.canon-europe.com/For_Home/Product_Finder/Printers/Bubble_Jet/PIXMA_iP5200R/features/labelprinting.asp?ComponentID=353923&SourcePageID=306484#2

There are instructions and a cd tray you can buy on ebay. It shows you how to enable this feature on the US models, but it will void your warranty.

I haven't had time or the need to do this yet, but I plan to...
