Brand new Mackie sub died

Well, a little over a month ago I bought a Mackie 1501 sub to replace my Yorkville that had died.

I used it at a few gigs and was pretty happy with it. Not quite as much kick as I would've liked, but it did sound pretty good.

I had last weekend off and the house to myself since my wife and daughter were downstate. So, I set up my lights, the Mackie and my backup powered mixer and one speaker. With Tyrone's DMX book in hand I started programming lights.

Everything was going great, had VDJ automixing some songs that I wanted to hear, making some great progress.

I decided to take a break, so I turned down the music and went into the computer room to have a smoke (it's the only room in the house we smoke in). While in there, I hear this "POP!!!" and then an electrical buzz. In a panic I ran out and unplugged everything.

That's when I noticed it. That burnt electronics smell (you all know the one I'm talking about). I sniffed around and figured out that it was coming from my new sub. So I plugged it back in and sure enough, the smell got stronger and the buzzing started again.

A quick search of the Mackie forums showed that this is a really common problem with the 1501. Lot's of people have experienced the "POP!" and buzz failure.

The good news, it's under warranty. The bad news is the local store that I got it from was unable to get a loaner up from their main store. So I'm gonna have to go without a sub this weekend.

The other good news is that Mackie is sending a brand new unit. So, I'm going to trade up for an 1801. I did my research and they don't seem to have many problems with the bigger sub.

- Tisk Tisk, In the computer room? Getting smoke on electronics, however off the point.

My boss never did have problems with the mackies except recently the fuse blew on the subs (Relatively cheap fix), and on the 450 tops, which was associated with bad power apparently. Which while on the topic I carry a socket tester and a multimeter to check for adequet voltage and proper wiring/grounding.

It's quite possible VDJ is the culprit though. Did you check your FAME settings? ;)
