Phase... In Or Out?

I have 2 JBL EON's and 1 JRX118SP 18" Subwoofer.....

I have noticed that when I engage the "Out Of Phase" switch on the Sub that the overall sound improves?

It does not make sense to me anyway that 3 speakers from the same Mfg. would be "Out Of Phase". But the overall sound is better it becomes crisper and cleaner when the Phase switch is engaged on the Sub.

Does this make Sense?

Lots of reasons this could be the case. Sound travels in waves, and when waves meet each other all kinds of interesting things happen (stick around for my exciting speech at mobile beat on this). Basically what you are doing when you switch the phase is you are reversing the polarity or phase of the wave.

An interesting note, in a training I attended several years ago Pat Brown (SynAudCon) was telling us that for every install we should take EVERY loudspeaker apart and check to be sure that it was properly wired internally and then use SMAART to test the phase and alignment of the enclosure so that it could be properly adjusted digitally later if necessary. Moral of this story... don't assume that they ARE in the same phase... even if they are SUPPOSED to be. It's rare, but remember that these speakers are made by people, and people make mistakes.

You can also invest in some less expensive devices besides SMAART, such as the Phonic PAA3. We sell quite a few of these, great little utility device.

Poor man's phase checker... 9V battery. Connect it to the speaker with + to + and - to -, it should "push" out, reverse poles it should "pull" in.

I second the use of SMAART, if your doing lots of FOH rigs it is an invaluable tool!

(I was waiting for Ben to respond, he could explain it in better English than I, Thanks Ben)
