Review: Kid Rock... Rock N Roll Jesus

Upfront disclaimer. I'm a HUGE fan of Kid Rock. I might be his biggest fan over 40 years old. :sqembarrassed: Also, you can call me a hipocrit ( sp? ) because I always kill hip hop guys for their use of bad language, and this CD has TONS of it.

That said, this is my review. I think that this is his best CD EVER. It just grabs my musical soul and doesn't let go. It flat out kicks butt.

1. Rock and Roll Jesus - Straight ahead rock and roll. Killer hooks. It flat out rocks!

2. Amen.... a country / rock / gospel tune about Kid's disillusion with religion and his struggles about following his personal beliefs.

3. All Summer Long.... My absolute favorite song on the whole CD. The song opens with the music bed of Werewolves of London, and subtly changes to the music bed of Sweet Home Alabama. It then keeps the SHA music bed all the way through. A song about what summer was like as a kid.... smoking weed, getting drunk, getting laid, at the lake while listening to Skynyrd... What more could I ask for? :sqlaugh: Totally catchy and singable.

4. Roll On... a country rock tune about how he went after his dreams and achieved them.... an introspective about the ups and downs of his life.

5. So Hott...pure hard rock.... as hard hitting as Bawitadawba. Heavy drums and guitar. This is the song getting all the airplay near me. But it isn't radio friendly. It needs a lot of editing. The "hook" is the line "I wanna F you like I'm never gonna see you again". I can't wait to play this with my 700 WPC DJ system... gonna shake the walls! :sqerr::sqbiggrin:

6.Sugar.... Kind of reminds me of a cross between several bands. Hard rock with a bit of rapping in it. It even references "Cowboy" in it..... this song would have been perfect on Devil w/o a Cause.

7. When you Love Someone...... A country rock tune. Upbeat and catchy, with a hint of bluegrass picking!

8. New Orleans..... A catchy little ditty, with NEW ORLEANS Style Jazz.... Read that again. New Orleans Style Jazz!

9. Don't Tell Me U Love Me.... Typical rocking Kid Rock. Nothing special about it, though except there are some great background vocals in the song at times.

10. Blue Jeans and a Rosary.... another one of those Kid rock life story songs, and about a girl he met who wore Blue Jeans and a Rosary.... somewhat similar in style to " Only God Knows Why".

11. Half Your Age.... a song about revenge. A country dance song. The hook is "She's Half Your Age and Twice as Hot"..... FUN! FUN! FUN!

12. Lowlife ( Living the HighLife )..... a country rocker ( mostly rock ) about Kid being a lowlife. It isn't a stellar track but I still like it.

13. Guilty.... straight ahead rock. I'm not even 100% sure that Kid is the lead singer in this tune. Kind of like a Bon Jovi song, but with balls, attitude, and bad language.

14. Jackson, Mississippi ( Live ).... A jamming guitar slamming tune, with an almost "evil" sound to it. Imagine Bad Company guitar, but a lot edgier. A tremendous song to end the CD with! leaves me wanting more.

I can't tell you how much I enjoy this CD! Not really a weak track on the whole CD - If you appreciate Kid's ability to play many genres. You guys know I love the guy, but I'm telling you this is one HELLUVA CD.

9.5 out of 10.

Kid Rock was one of the first Rocker's I liked and listened too. He's responsible for me trying out other rock music. Still, I'm not Rock's biggest fan but I've bought a lot of albums because of Kid Rock being the "gateway artist" for me.

just picked it up and am giving it a listen as I write this. Like it a lot so far, I don't know if I can say it's my favorite Kid Rock album just yet, but nice.

Edit: Just finished with New Orleans, sweet song. "Highest Hillbilly Bourban Street has ever seen", nice.

2nd Edit: OK, its quickly growing on me. Twice your age is freakin hilarious!.

I think Kid Rock's music is pretty nice...

To bad he's a jerk (omitted proper profane word) to the production guys at shows. He really is pompous.

Well, I won't go THAT far, but I have to say that this is the first CD that I can enjoy from beginning to end since Jagged Little Pill.

Not many artists (even the ones I like) can do that for me anymore.

...and for the record, I never really liked Kid Rock much.

Papa: Question...

Is this recording full of "expletives"?

Just curious.

Thanks,

Kirby

***k yeah :sqlaugh:

Probably wouldn't be a Kid Rock album without it though... :sqwink:

It's sorta like watching the movie Dogma, in terms of his use of expletives. It just wouldn't be the same without it, IMHO... :)

I'd play All Summer Long in public :)

The worst lyrics in there, are "smokin' funny things", "sippin' whiskey out the bottle".

I hear worse than that on TV everyday :sqerr:

I love this cd...I love the expletives too! Sugar and So Hott are my favorites!

Funny...

Some people can use expletives in a way that enhances what they are trying to say, and some just throw them around, for the sake of being an idiot, or cool guy, or whatever.

I don't see Kid as the latter type... :sqwink:

His music has depth, and I think he uses his to make a point, in a somewhat self-deprecating way.

YMMV, just my humble opinion :)

Ok, Papa I gave it a listening at Hank's Lounge (Thanks Hank) and I was pretty impressed. Over all it's an "in your face" rock and roll recording.

I will put this on my "personal" list of discs to get.

Personally, I bet you could play this whole disc at a Bubble Party! :sqeek::sqrolleyes::sqerr:

Gracias, dude.:sqcool:

Here's a good one for ya Son... Bit of trivia, or just the imagination of the ol' man :)

Figure out where the backbeat from New Orleans came from.

Think 70's.

Damn, the trains going by, I can't hear myself ;)

Papa Deuce
12-29-2007, 10:47 PM
LOL.... I've often tried to figure it out and can't... but I know that I SHOULD know.... it sounds so familiar.

Take yer trusty Rockit, place Grand Funk Railroad's Some Kind Of Wonderful in one deck, and New Orleans in the other.

You can do wonderful, and amazing things, mixing those two together  :sqwink:

one of the tracks samples Sweet Home Alabama too... which would make a great mix
