Travis B 07-27-2006, 10:19 PM Is Karaoke to you a good investment? Or a waste of time? DjG 07-28-2006, 12:43 AM You will honestly get more gigs and more wedn's....if you go with karaoke, A. because you can charge more..... B. because drunk pepole like to make a fool out of them selves hahaha DJ Dan 07-28-2006, 03:19 AM You will honestly get more gigs and more wedn's....if you go with karaoke, A. because you can charge more..... B. because drunk pepole like to make a fool out of them selves hahaha LOL I don't do karoke personally but every DJ I know whose added on a Karaoke package makes more money. Heck, Karaoke can even turn normally dead nights (Mon-Thurs) into a decent income if you pick up a few bar jobs. Even though bars notoriously don't pay all that great, it'll put some extra cash in your pocket. DJ Dave 07-29-2006, 02:46 PM I dunno about Karaoke.. Last time I tried it, I invested over 2 grand and I only booked about 3 shows over a 6 month period. I guess I didn't market it enough but I certainly didn't justify my investment! LOL jfactor1 08-10-2006, 06:00 PM If you think there are cuthroats in the DJ world, try the Karaoke world. :( But, it can be a profitable add on. jfactor1 08-10-2006, 10:17 PM I do agree that a host should be able to sing at least two songs fairly well. I can fake my way almost all the way through the entire Foundation. I hope I never have to in public though :) Carolyn 09-12-2006, 10:09 AM Actually, If you are going to do shows on a regular basis you need atleast 12 songs. There are those nights that no one wants to sing especially at a new show and then you have you carry it. With that many you will be ok. Balanced Line 09-12-2006, 11:22 AM Actually, If you are going to do shows on a regular basis you need atleast 12 songs. Talk about a night of hellish consequences. Then again I could imagine a small windfall there. Get paid for the gig, then get paid to shut up or simply leave. No, better to remain silent and appear talent less than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt. If that is the standard MO for the operator to sing in the absence of patrons, my only option would be to punt, as Michael Palin did in his Around the World series and sing, You are My Sunshine. Perhaps Karaoke is not an option. In the standard Karaoke package is a basket included to carry the tune? BTW: Did you know Karaoke simply means “empty orchestra”? http://www.palinstravels.co.uk/book-1397 Carolyn 09-12-2006, 12:02 PM LOL, Ok, when there are nights like that I rotate sing a couple, play a couple of cds. There are so many songs to choose from, it is only a matter of figuring out what fits your voice. It's funny but now if I just hear someones speaking voice I can tell you what they would sing well. That being said there are other factors. For example you will be playing to different crowds some like country, rock, oldies, new rock, pop. Those are the majority that I see at parties and at shows. You just read the crowd quite the same as if you were DJing. If it is a regular show once you get to know the singers this is what I do. Although most people have said that I spoil my customers it works both ways. I keep a index card file of everything they sing. If I they are at the show I call them up regardless whether or not they have put a song in or not. At first they act surprised that you did that, but they enjoy getting the attention. Balanced Line 09-12-2006, 12:40 PM One word: Dylan Carolyn 09-12-2006, 01:42 PM Dylan usually goes over pretty well depending on the crowd. If Dylan works for you I would suggest some Johnny Cash for a country option like Ring of Fire. Keep your hands to yourself by the Georgia Satellites. Some of Matchbox Twenty or Lynyrd Skynyrd songs may work also. Just a few options, by the way you can always practice at home. Carolyn 09-13-2006, 09:55 AM My husband serenades me, the dog, and the cat, for hours everytime he wants to increase his song list. HiDefDJ 09-20-2006, 09:15 PM I dunno about Karaoke.. LOL You should have done free/very cheap gigs for 10 years to force out your competition. Then when you are the only guy left you can DOUBLE your rates to be at the level the other guys were before you undercut them. Then if another guy comes along simply revert to free/cheap gigs to strong arm him away. If all else fails then visit hiswebsite and write false horrible reviews. That's the idiot proven method from Iowa. jfactor1 09-20-2006, 09:16 PM You should have done free/very cheap gigs for 10 years to force out your competition.
