I have the new laptop coming for my assistant, and I need to know if there is a way to move the emails in the current Outlook on his computer to the new one (no, they are no longer on the original server).

I don't want them in just a text file, but want to be able to basically keep it in email form and just have them reproduced in the new outlook.

You need to copy the Outlook.pst and extend.dat files to the new computer.

Then there's this really neat and complicated way to move the email account settings and passwords over (if you want access to your email accounts).

It can get sticky if you're not familiar with the process, as the pst file contains references to the user name on the computer it came from. So, if the user names match, it's easy. There may also be issues with any anti-virus you may have running, as it also contains references to those. If you run into that, delete the extend.dat file, and Outlook will auto create a new one when it starts up on the new machine.

Location of files:

Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

I have a program that will retrieve the passwords for the email accounts if you transfer those over (you lose the passwords when you transfer).

One more important tid-bit. The machine's user names had best be the same for simplicity sake.

Also, to save your Rules and Accounts information, use the Export feature on both. Export and save all your existing Account .iaf files and the Rules .rwz files so that they too can be imported exactly as they stand on your previous machine.

I have to backup outlook files all the time when we (at work that is and home building new systems) - that its all done the same way every backup

just backup the pst files if its outlook NOT outlook express
if its outlook express then you go to this directory to back that up

plus this will be different on every system

C:\Documents and Settings\admin\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{8F45D524-1553-4687-9DBC-FF2383EF8EB1}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

just back that directory up for outlook express.....
want more ask
