How many of you use a laptop without a controller? I'm looking to use VDJ, but not sure about the controller, will I be able to auto or crossfade as with CD players?

I don't know about VDJ but I do know with Ots AV, MixMeister, PCDJ and many more you can do that and more without a controler... to me a controler is a crutch for someone who isn't ready to let go of their tactile surface controls in lue of a computer keyboard and mouse.... it's about control and what makes you comfortable.... but don't listen to me make up your own mind try it both ways see what works for you.

With VDJ you can create keyboard shortcuts to do vitually anything. Yes, it supposts all kinds of controllers as well.....
If all you are looking to do is crossfade, use the KB shortcuts....

Laptop, no controller.

Tried both the PCDJ and the Numark controllers. My style of musical performance doesn't need the "scratchy" stuff so they weren't all that enhancing.

I have a nearly brand new showroom condition Numark DMC2 controller for $300.00 if anyone's interested.

My older rig has the DMC-1 controller and my newer "mini" rig has the Dac-2. I run PCDJ and VDJ and I use the controllers off and on depending on which way I'm facing. Mostly use the touchpad, Hot Keys and F-Keys though.

Virtual DJ No Controller.

I did use a $10 usb number keypad for a while and sill do use it when I mix video. I assign all the shortcuts to the usb keypad. I got it at Office Max.

I could go either way (on the controllers, that is) :)

I'm fairly handy with a mouse and keyboard, but I can work a little faster with the right controller while playing (I don't do wiki-wiki BTW, so the jog knobs are meaningless to me, and I provide a toggle to turn them off in my new software).

I also happen to hate laptop keyboards. So, if I'm gonna have something, it would be a full controller over a second keyboard or keypad...

VDJ for me without controller. Actually just sold my total control...didn't like the extra piece of gear on the table or using it live. Seemed like an extra step to me.

Last night my touchpad on my laptop went all haywire for about 30 mintues...I had to learn the keyboard shortcuts real quick!

Speaking of that, how do I go about assigning my own shortcuts for VDJ? For instance I'd like to move the crossfade to the R and L arrows. Also can I assign a quick (slam) crossfade function to a single key?

Thank you for all your answers, will VDJ accept the RANE Mp4 cross fader to fade one song to the other? I wanted to get a sound card that would pronably do both jobs.

Kris - Config - Keyboard Shortcut - Add ...you can then add you own...You can edit an existing short cut as well

I used to run Traktor 3 by itself... I think when I was working on it I looked liked I was typing a mad email.... SOO i have the total control... I actually got it off of knardini... I love the box, The controller just makes things quicker and easier... although it is not necessary... For any PC software though... YOU NEED a good Audio output... If you cant prelisten or CUE up, your asking for problems...

djMarco : This is what i am using http://www.ourdjtalk.com/showthread.php?t=9999
I can use this setup without a mixer... basicly I just use the mixer so I have additional inputs and outputs... The DJIO has an MIC in, so really all I need would be a laptop, Total Crontrol and DJIO, but I Like to play it safe...

Gee djMarco, I've use a "mixerless" pc mixer and midi controller 5 times a week, for like the last year no problems.

See where the arrow points? Those are VU meters. I run karaoke. My singers have seperate VU meters for vocals/background music on the karaoke screen. Can't do that without a PC mixer.

I think I'm lost were this discussion is going but I agree with Marco that you have to have some sort of backup regardless of how reliable you computer is/has been over the years. You gotta have back up CD's, ipod, vinyl, heck your cell phone, something or you will look like an amature at some point.

I used a laptop running VDJ without a controller for quite a while. It worked fine for me with a mouse (I hate touchpads).

I bought the Total Control when it first came out. It made a big difference for me. It does take some getting used to, but once you've used it for a bit it works great. I like having a tactile surface to work versus keyboard shortcuts.

It's just another one of those personal decisions we all make when it comes to gear.
