To return or not? Some wisdom?

Yeah, I still refuse to walk into her bar. If I'm so "old and ugly", then how I dj school dances with 600 kids at all flipping out and having a great time...I dunno.
I'm sick of bar owner mentality.
One club I worked at a few years ago(in the middle of the night mind you), the owner came in the dj booth and proceeded to tell me to stop playing rap music.
Why?
Because HE doesn't like it. Unlike the 150+ people in the club dancing, having fun, and spending money. So under the threat of being FIRED, I stopped playing rap music. After pissing off the entire crowd, we went from 150+ to about 50 in less than an hour. Guess who's fault that was? That's right. All mine. He chewed me out for not playing requests(which I pointed out were all rap songs and that he didn't want me to play rap, but it didn't matter...I'm supposed to play people's requests).

Later on, I found out that he's a major cokehead and drunk. The drunk part I knew, but...Ironically, the club closed due to a lack of business because of improper management. The owner(captain coke)leased it out to new owners.
And they(non-cokeheads) turned the place around and pack it tight every weekend. They offered me a job, but after being in that building for over 5 years I decided to turn it down...
I don't work in bars/clubs at this point...There's nothing around me that says "yeah! come work here!"...it's all redneck bars, dives referred to as "clubs"...or just bars with the pool tables moved to make room for a dancefloor.

that is the exact reason i stopped doing bars...sames things happened

Well, so far so good. I did my first return show last night, to a VERY welcoming crowd. They kept their word and boosted me nicely in a full page color ad in Steppin' Out, which came out today. Next week should be even better.....

Great job, Joe! Make us proud here. We love when one of our own succeeds...thx

Sounds like you would like to go back.....There is no sure fired cure for this situation. I have always found that my "gut" instincts are usually right. As an owner of an establishment they have the right to make changes whenever they want to.....that will never change, irrespective of any agreements with you. That goes along with ownership of anything.....total control........Especially with no contract....

I find it funny that bar owners always "know" exactly what the customer likes, dislikes, etc.

On a funny ironic note, "captain coke" gave me a call and told me about how he's looking into building a resturaunt/night club and asked me if I would like to work there...LOL!

Joe,

How are they messing with your rotation? Are they recieving a financial incentive when they mess with it? Do you take bribes? Is their bribe taking interferring with yours?

I had this situation early on at my club. Very frugal elderly Japanese owners. They would take tips/bribes and not inform me. At the time I was sort of against a bribe system, but I figured hey "It's their bar, i'll agree to it, and play it to my advantage"

So it's all out in the open. We have a set system for bribes and signage explaning it. $1 per person you cut in front of.

There's never a situation where someone has enough $$$ to bribe themselves out of every round. Let's say there's a 20 man rotation, Mr Bribe is cued into round 3,4,5,6. He wants to sing 4 times in a row..

Well, it's a 20 man rotation and we're on singer 10.
First bribe out of round costs him $11

Now remember I said 20 man rotation?
Second round bribe out into current round-- $20
Third round bribe out into current round --$40
Fourth round bribe out into current round --$60

So altogether for this person to screw with rotation to sing 4 times in a row, it costed him $131.

Sometimes we hook a dumb fish like that, most often folks learn after the first time bribing and never do it again. At least the bribes don't happen behind my back with me getting nothing out of it. My boss understands the price and just shares the $$$ with me.

Our regulars are pretty understanding when we have situations like that too. We have had times where folks with deep pockets maybe got a round or two bribed, but they learn pretty fast that it's gonna costs them.

Toqer,

I understand the Japanese system well. My Sensei used to take me to all Japanese karaoke bars. Works there, but I NEVER mess with the rotation, and my patrons know it. The owner USED TO try to get me to skip a mediocre singer, or put her friends up quickly or more often, to which I replied NO. My patrons come to my other venues as well, and I need to keep them happy, as I'm running a business too. This time around she's leaving the show to me.... Apparently the interim guy completely killed the night through inconsistancy,( Sometimes show up, sometimes not, sometimes send a kid to sub with no experience). The guy was a DJ ( and a good one) that was adding karaoke for the first time without learning what it was first, plus no work ethic.

Bleh it wasn't luck... I'm a gaijin... Took me a loooooong time to convince them to give me the job. Ever since I took over they can afford to go back to .jp twice a year, so I know they love me :)

Might have taken a long time to convince 'em, but you're kickin' butt now, and they love it..
