Which is the best Starter Music Video Collection

Having blown my brains out on video nearing 10,000 tracks, you are going to get off easy by getting the Hot Video Classics collection and then starting Hot Video monthly.
HVC covers it and then some, at a fraction of the cost of buying every issue from every year.
Another Beeeeeautiful collection is the Midnight Special series that just came out on dvd for the pre 80's music that was coincidentally recorded unlike the mtv and studio versions recorded as music video as we know it.
The video has some troubles here and there because its shot live, but the audio is pretty good and done in 5.1 Dolby.
Finally have Barry White, and Ike and Tina doing Proud Mary, dam she looks good, Just to mention a couple.

HVC is Hot Video Classics from Promo Only, yes.

Good stuff, hard to go wrong.
If you start switching around, and there are other sources, you will wind up with many duplicates, and with the cost of video it's hard to eat that.
The have special pricing for ADJA, and best have a subscription before you start buying singles.

The problem with that collection is that everything is Live, so you hear the chearing from the crowd in the back.

I'd like to VJ but I dont think that will happen anytime soon in my area. Most brides dont want lights never mind a big screen displaying people in sequenced vests.

However, I dont want to be left out if they do decide they want this, so I just need somewhere to start for now:)

You cue around the cheering and intro's easy enough.
I understand the wedding thing, hard to fit that in but some use plasmas down low.
However, MOST of the traditional songs played at weddings are available and clean enough for public viewing.
For those rough spots we have ways around it with software cover ups.
I do 90% video at schools, private parties and resorts and have pretty good success with it.
The problem comes with content and mixed age groups, discretion is a must and you know how kids can be about their music demands.
And no, they don't like it when you don't play the video version of their requests.
It's not easy in that regard.

Thanks Steve, its back to work tomorrow, maybe half days at first, but 3-4 weeks ahead of schedule means things are mending up pretty well.

Rick old friend I was unaware of your down time please fill me in or direct me to the details. Glad to see you back and ready to get back to work. Heres to a more prosperous and healthy yr for all of us. Sorry to post in a thread without staying on topic of course I dont do video so dont belong here but only to say hi to Rick.

Hi Jay,
Got your phone message a while back, sorry for the ignant blow off, I honestly forgot to call back been off the beaten path with the hubs locked for a while.
I feel pretty good now, been a rough month particularly with the holidays and all.
The story is I donated a kidney to my mom and have been through a gauntlet of testing phases all summer with the cut me date of 12 7.
She is doing fine with my back up seasoned beer filter of the past, and I feel glad that I was able to extend her life. I was told she probably had another 2 years and now has 15+ if she stays otherwise healthy.

On a side note, I have kind of given up on other boards beside the vdj board. That keeps me pretty busy with support and out of trouble on chat and pdj.
I really don't care for the spats that I got sucked into so I gave up and walked. Its too easy for me to post out of anger so I don't anymore, I just read. Even staying out of the main forums didn't stop it, life is too short.

I signed on here a long time ago and forgot about it only to get a Happy New Years message in my mail box and checked it out.
Funny to see the same faces here and by some of the posts it looks like I missed some messy ones on the other side, and glad I did.

I miss a lot of you and it is good to see guys like Steve Miller still around.
Funny how getting banned can make people disappear.

And good luck to the mods and forum staff in keeping this place happy and tidy. That is a nearly impossible task as a membership grows.

Peace
R

Back on topic....
KC did a recent tour with the disco stars that is available on DVD btw.
The tour was called KC & the Sunshine Band's Boogie Blast.

My favorite track is "Get Down Tonight" which for some reason has been overlooked with all of the classic series and I'm talking ALL of the promos, Screenplays and ETV listings.

These are the kind of videos that turn crowds on for me every time regardless of age. Nothing I like better than seeing mom, dad and the kids staring at the screen shaking their a$$es off. This particular disc I use during warm up and setting up lighting about an hour before the dance starts and it never fails to pack the places I go.

Thanks for filling in Rick. Hope all is well with you.

I concur. The best starter set is the entire Hot Video Classics series from Promo Only. There are 30+ DVD's in this set from the 70's up to 2001. You will also want to pick up the separate Spooky, Hair Bands, Love Songs, Country, and most importantly All Time Party Classics DVD's. You can also pick up the Christmas & Reggaeton DVD's too. PO really needs to release a Best of Latin disc though.

Buying these videos won't be cheap though. DVD's are more expensive but you GET MORE titles per disc as compared to audio only. Look to spend about $1,500 to build a nice sized library of about 1,500 videos.

Title for title, video is actually CHEAPER than audio discs. With the above set you are getting the BEST videos of all time with LITTLE TO NO FILLER. There is a rare repeat video, but nothing too bad. Your best bet is to pick one manufacturer and stick with them to avoid repeats.

Screenplay is slowly introducing a similar set as Promo Only on a month by month basis called the "Classic" series. I've got one or 2 discs from Screen Play that are actually relabeled under ERG. Quality is on par with Promo Only from what I've seen.

After that your best bet is to hit Walmart and purchase some greatest hits DVD collections. Live concert DVD's are great too. I've got the greatest hits or live concert DVD's of Madonna, Journey, Guns N Roses, Bob Marley, Barry Manilow, Michael Jackson, Jimmy Buffet, Motley Crue and more.

The key to the city is to think OUTSIDE the box in regards to music videos and where to get them.

Think about all of the movie DVD's you have sitting at your house. Many of them contain GREAT music videos that you can play at your gigs. There are two types of videos in this manner.

1) Actual music videos that are linked from the menu page of the DVD. You can play the video just like you would do the movie, special features, or what have you.

2) Music video clips from the movie itself. I'll give examples below.

I have Jim Carey's "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" on DVD. While not in the movie itself, there is a link on the menu page so that you can view Faith Hill's "Where Are You Christmas" music video.

The same thing applies to Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's "Bad Boys" movie a few years back. They have the music video for Diana King's "Shy Guy." I believe the version on the DVD has the music video mixed with movie clips. I believe there is a stand alone music video WITHOUT movie clips available as well.

There are countless DVD's with these types of clips.

The second type of more common and are actually scenes from a movie. For instance, take the classic "Animal House." I bought the DVD solely to rip Otis Day's "Shout" video. That always goes over awesome. You can also rip the "Shout" clip from "Wedding Crashers." The beginning of this version is fine but the end gets raunchy with girls getting tossed onto the bed topless. You have to watch for that. I haven't done it yet but I plan to make a mix video that switched between the Animal House and Wedding Crashers clips while keeping the Otis Day audio going.

Another example is "Be Our Guest" from Beauty & The Best. I haven't done it yet but I plan to buy the movie just to play that scene. I almost always play that song to start dinner and always get compliments on it. the video would be awesome to have too.

This is also great for songs like "Scotty Doesn't Know" from Eurotrip. 20 something's LOVE this movie and the video goes great.

How about Haddaway "What Is Love?" I haven't seen the original version but heard it sucks. You have three options with this song.

1) Use the original music video.
2) Buy "Night At The Roxbury" movie and use clips from it. I don't think there's an actuall full length video though.
3) My choice is to buy the Will Ferrall Saturday Night Live DVD. It has THE BEST version of the skit with Jim Carrey. I remember watching this skit years ago on SNL and instantly grew to think of this as the BEST Roxbury skit they had.

I use the clip from SNL with a little editing. There is an audio pause or 2 in the actual skit so I redubbed the audio with the original song so there's no silent parts. for the right crowds I will even play the version with silence and get some laughs.

I forgot another source of videos. There are some videos in mpg format on actual audio cd's. I can't recall any off the top of my head, but I've got a David Hasselhoff cd single of "Jump In My Car." There's also the mpg video on the disc that I can simply transfer to my computer without ripping or converting. Just drag and drop from the cd onto my computer and I'm set!

OK, I just browsed the Screenplay listings and I like what I see in the Classic series. They have a lot of 80's videos that Promo Only does not currently provide although I'm sure more 80's discs are coming soon. The best part is that Screenplay currently offers a 60's disc with artists such as Hendrix, Joplin, Dylan & more!

Good luck!

Great advise... have been toying with the same ideas myself. Just chopped the heck out of 'The Blues Brothers" today, got 3 great full length videos out of it. Another good one to chop up is "Wedding Singer"... Had a Bride and Groom request the "I want to Grow Old With You" song/video he sings on the plane as their first dance.
