Gang - Here's the deal. When buying gear from the US, I miss out on all the free shipping. Even for a small package, you're talking $60 US minimum.

I live about 1 hour from Houlton, Maine. Any one near that area know of a place that I can have stuff shipped to there; they'll hold it and I can drive across and pick it up.

UPS has a depot here....Ben.....any ideas?

Anyone?

Thnaks

Look for a private mail box place - (e.g. Mail Boxes Etc). You can rent a PMB and they will sign for and hold packages until you pick them up.

I use a PMB that is near my house just so I don't have packages with $$$ worth of stuff sitting on my porch all day long.

If you do get another shipping location be sure to get it setup as an approved shipping location with your credit card, plus many vendors only want to ship to the registered billing address.

The private mail box would cost XX per month which would essentially negate any savings....

I pay $150 a year. So, odds are good that you will save $$$ starting with the 4th or 5th package of the year. How many packages a year do you receive?

You know the only problem I see with having things shipped anywhere other than to you is that in the case of a damaged delivery.... if the box is damaged the shipping company can document that for you in case the item inside is damaged as well... if it's an insured delivery the shipping company can be held liable but only if you inspect the deliery before the driver leaves... just a thought.

Never having been to Canada before, I'm curious - is there anything you have to deal with in paying duties with customs or anything of the like when crossing back over the border to go home if you had such an arrangement?

Could be skirted I bet if the items were removed from their packageing... and appear as something he had with him as a course of traveling and or possibly doing a job on our side of the boarder.

Heres the scoop. I will have my next NLFX order deliverd to Blaine Washington which has a shipping agent place that I have given my number to. They receive package and hold it under my name. They phone me when its in and I pay 5 dollars to pick that package up. There is a additional charge for over a certain weight I think 50 or 75 lbs. I have two weeks to retrieve it and if its not made in Canada or on the free trade you will likely pay no duty. There is additional fees to pay if you choose to cross and return the same day. If you are in the U.S.A. 48 hours minimum, each person in your return vehicle is allowed 750 spent with no GST or PST penalties which are roughly 13% currently. One other thing at 83 cents Canadian to the US dollar do some math. Even at 83 penalties and all its most often a savings as many of the dealers up here gouge ya for duty and everything plus 20% or more.
Hope this helps.

PS on some occasions if its less than 100 or even 200 it depends on the boarder guard sometimes they are in a good mood and say no worries go ahead (not running you into the customs office).

Just find some guy and his family in Northern Maine and address to the mother, sister, cousin. It's likely they're all the same person anyway.:sqerr:
If you're shipping fishing lures I wouldn't expect to get them back. The dude most likely gave them to his wife as earrings.:sqlaugh:

My post was more useless than yours.:sqwink:

yeah just put some duct tape on it,most customs folks will think its used stuff unless it has the new gear smell on it.

Uh...I don't want or need to mess with Canadian border guards. They can make your life unpleasant

Hath - when bringing goods across the border you have to pay the GST/HST (Jon - I think you're wrong there)....Here it's 13%...If I buy in Canada, i gotta pay it anyway.

Duty is a weird thing. As Jon says, stay 48 hours you can bring in up to $750 duty free. Below that duty applies only if the item is made outside the US and Mexico (remember that free Trade deal). The duty is 6 % or something thereabouts....

Sound in Motion...I don't know that I would buy enough to justify the PO box....

Tuck has the perfect set up.......I'll have to see if something like that exists in Houlton...
