I have a meeting with a client to talk about their wedding for next summer.

They want jazz background music during dinner. I do have a small selection of jazz music which I use. However, the groom plays in a jazz band and knows his music. When I go and discuss the wedding with them, I want to have a larger selection of jazz.

What I'm asking here is for a list of jazz Artists and songs so I can start adding to my collection.

Do any of the music subscription services offer any worthwhile jazz music I should pick up?

Jazz is a pretty wide category. My suggestion is to find out what they want and go from there, instead of just buying a bunch of stuff blindly.

Prime Cuts has a smooth jazz subscription if that helps.

A Few More

Here is an excellent album (Kinda pricey but worth it)
Amazon.com: Jazz at the Pawnshop: Various Artists, Arne Domnerus, Bengt Hallberg, Lars Erstrand, Gerog Riedel, Egil Johansen: Music@@AMEPARAM@@http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ZT91KK0WL.@@AMEPARAM@@51ZT91KK0WL

Other labels that are quite good. Almost anything on the GRP label which includes artists like Lee Ritenour, Chick Corea, Dianne Schuur, Dave Grusin, Mindi Abair among others.

There is Big Band Jazz, Swing Jazz, Traditional Jazz, Modern Jazz and Smooth Jazz.
One of my favorite artists is Wynton Marsalis (This is also an excellent song for testing your speakers/system after setup, it has great his, mids & lows)

Obtaining a bunch of Jazz won't make you anymore savvy so, why put up a front?

It's only for an hour or two, so why not have the groom put a list together for you?

Keep it honest and real.

Hank,
He does not have to go out and purchase everything everyone suggests. The hazard of having someone give you a list is that you could end up having to buy a bunch of music you would only use once. By getting a few examples from the client, you can choose what to buy that you know will be an asset to your collection, good for present as well as future use.

On the other hand, if this guy likes Jazz, he may more than likely have good taste in the genre resulting in good additions to the collection and a free education.

That could very well be true but it would only be an assumption that he really knows Jazz. When I personally hear "Jazz", I think of Coltrane, Gillespie, Davis, Mingus, Shorter, Monk etc. Some others will think of Kenny G, Sandborn, George Howard. (To me those are Jazz flavored). Instead of him asking the client for a list he should ask the client what type of Jazz he likes, or even ask him for 5 songs.
I know people who say they love Jazz but yet they hate Duke Ellington, Benny Carter, Dave Brubeck.... go figure!

I love a style of jazz called "Acid Jazz". It is actually quite funky and fun. Some artists are Mindy Abair, Jazza Nova, Down To The Bone, Brian Culbertson. It is pretty good stuff and I use it a lot.

You have a good pick! I have lots of albums from GRP. Almost everything on that label is worth playing.

Thanks, you can't go wrong with GRP for dinner music. I also have Cinemagic
and The GRP Allstar Big Band. Great stuff!

Here's another excellent CD, I have it on cassette.

Kirby's right, Abbey...
there are very specific types of jazz, so it may be best to ask the groom the songs and/or artists he enjoys the most...and THEN beef up your selection. Or, stroke his ego and ask if he has any recordings of his jazz band that you can use.
