Friday night while setting up for my gig I was lifting a speaker, (speaker pole is at 7 feet) I missed the hole (LOL that doesn't happen often) and the speaker slipped I caught but i was in an awkard position so i caught it wil one hand, as it was coming down my arm twisted, there was a very loud popping sound and my arm became totally useless (right arm). I did my show in extreme pain but made it through and made it home (with a lot of help from the bar staff)! I called the doc yesterday and told him what I had done he told me to take 600 miligrams of Ibruprohen every four hours for the inflamation and called in a presciption of Perks for the pain and told me to keep ice on my shoulder all day yeasday and moist heat today. I have an appointment with him tomorrow!

I was told it was possibly a torn rotator cup.

Has anyone else here had this condition and how long does it take to recover from it. Right now my arm just hangs useless by my side!

I have shows to do all week every week and this just may be a real problem for me!

Sorry to hear about that (Next time put some fur around the hole and you wont miss it! LOL).
It may be a good time to hire a roadie until that arm heals.
There is an analgesic that I use that has helped me with Carpal Tunnel that I had earlier this year. You may want to try that too. http://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&ke...x=aps&hvadid=3562968055&ref=pd_sl_9gte6jukh_e

Roadie is already lined up, I am not happy about it but with the setups and driving (while on drugs) is just not something I can do alone! But I hate having to explain what I want 10 times a night every night!

Hopefully it'll turn out to be a lesser injury.

Sorry to hear about your accident. This is why I started searching for smaller, light weight speakers soon after I got into this business. No way am I going to lift anywhere near 50-60 pounds up onto a speaker stand, 35 is my max.

Sounds like you're going to need someone to set up and even do the load ins for you for a while and then after your surgery it's going to be a couple of months at least before you can do any lifting unless you want to injure yourself again.

Maybe you can just set up several speaker systems where you entertain regularly and just walk in with a laptop and a mixer? I know that would make MY life a lot easier. The hardest part of what we do is setting up and breaking down equipment IMO. The part in between is nothing like work to me compared to other things I've done. Good luck

Hold on slick what do you mean surgery?

The doc didn't say anything about surgery!

Just that it may be a torn rotator cup, it doesn't seem to me that if it is just torn that it would require surgery!

These were small light weight speakers (Impulse 100's (28 pound class)!

Steve,
The term I think your doc meant to use is rotator cuff. Essentially it is a group of muscles and tendons that keep the upper end of your arm bone in the socket where it belongs.
Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Bill,

Yes that may have been what he said! So the muscles are torn, I guess that is why I can't lift my arm!

I have full power in my hand and lower arm I just can't get the upper part of my arm to move!

I guess going Golfing is out of the question then. You can suspend the subscription of Playboy until that hand heals!

Steve,
If I understood your original post the doc said "possibly".
Maybe nothing is torn. Might just be a strain or sprain.
We don't know yet and the doc won't even guess.
I'm thinking an MRI in your immediate future.
Take your meds and try to relax.
Did the doc say anything about ice packs?
I'm not recommending them, just follow the all doc's orders.
You'll know soon enough what' going on in there and worrying about it today won't do a bit of good.

Bright Side!

Hey! Look on the bright side man. At least you did not say "I've fallen and I can't get up!" :sqlaugh:

Who knows, maybe you won't need surgery. When you go to have it X-rayed or an MRI they will see how badly you were injured. It may heal without surgery and then over time you can do specific exercises to strengthen those muscles.

Bill,

Yres he told me to keep it iced yesterday and moist heat today!

If you indeed tore your rotercuff (sp?) expect surgery to repair it... and then 6-8 weeks of recovery. My dad did this, while digging out his septic tank for repairs he fell into the hole catching himself with his upper arms.... this caused a muscle to tear and bunch up in his bicep area.... which required surgery to repair.

Then the big dummy did it again....

He was trying to hide from you, eh?

Rob,

I don't have any bunched muscles but do have some swelling in my arm from my shoulder to my hand! The worst thing is having to actually use my left hand to move my right arm around. It is like having a dead appendage just hanging on my right side!

I am thankful that I can do most things as well with my left hand as I can with my right. as it is right now I can't even write with the right hand because the arm won't move!

Sorry to hear about your new injury! :sqfrown:

There is no way to know the full extent of your injury until they do the right tests.

It could be anything from swollen muscles to torn muscles to bursitis to a torn rotator cuff. While we can assume the worse, it is not uncommon that it could be something sorta simple, that will go away within the next month, or it could be as serious as something that you may forever be dealing with.

Personally, I am praying and hoping its only a short term injury, and I hope Godspeed on a full and quick recovery.

Take care, and as you heal, do not do any unecessary lifting even if you start feeling a bit better. Make sure you heal fully before you take them risks that potentially could slow your recovery.

Worst case scenario, surgery. Most of the time resting the joint + Anti inflammatory painkillers + Ice in the first 24-36 hours will help. Usually an X-Ray, MRI, Arthrogram, or Arthroscopy will tell the whole story. Depending on what the doctor see's he'll decide what to do

Most importantly let the shoulder heal before using resuming the same activities with it. If it's not heal damage may become permanent. Physical therapy (Exercise) will help once your doc approves it.

Take care and get well soon.
