DJs have big egos.... agree?

I think some people say ego when they really mean confident.

to me, ego has a negative conotaion and confidence is positive.

When someon has a big ego, they think they are more important than others. It's what they think that's important...not what others think.

When someone is very confident, they know what they can do and what they can't. They are not afraid to ask questions and let others know what they don't know.

I would like to think i am confident and don't have a big ego.

I used to be arrogant- Now I'm just sure....

Actually my ego is show dependant. When the show goes great, I am unable to get my head through the door. If, however I have an off night ( extremely rare, because I'm magnificent :sqcool: ), I feel like I could walk UNDER the door.

Between shows I don't notice much in the way of egotistical behavior one way or another...

Having an ego isn't such a bad thing, it's when we become "egocentric" we move to another whole level.

Just my opinion..... :D

agreed!

No doubt we all have some ego....the question is what level.

I don't know if any of us would be in this business if we didn't have some form of Ego/Confidence......right..??

I agree with Scott here, Personally I don't feel I have an ego or that I am full of myself and I don't think anyone that is a guest at a function I do feels that way. Am I confident in what I do? absolutely. Do I think I am special and am the only one that can do the job I do? not hardly!

My feelings don't get hurt when a potential client turns down my offer and I don't chase them around trying to find out why they went with someone else's service. That is EGO!

I don't try to tell clients how to have a good time! That is EGO!

I don't try to tell other DJ's what they should be doing! That is EGO!

I don't try to tell other's what to charge! That is EGO!

I don't say that a DJ who got the job I didn't sucks! That is EGO!

I do what I do, I charge what I charge, I know I can give my clients what they pay for! And that is confidence!

Hmmmmm, do I have a big ego?

I have confidence. I have stage presence. I try to listen more than talk. I try not to dominate the show because it is not mine to dominate. I try not to be wise in my own eyes (a legend in my own mind).

Yes, I am an extrovert but I try not to let my ego take over.

I used to have a business partner that was Mr. Ego. Papa, I think you met him in AC. This guy would tell you about all the things he's done and how great he is. He would talk about all the clubs he worked in and how he did a fantastic job at each.

99.99999% of it was BS.

Don't get me wrong, he is a good DJ. He just needs to reel in the ego and shut up for a while. (and stop drinking, and stop breaking the law, and stop ...)

Amen, brother!

Absolutely you have to have a big ego. It has to come across in every sales call you do and every visit you make anywhere. You have to let every potential client, venue and vendor know that if you dont hire / recommend me, you will be making the biggest mistake of your life. That is the only way to get the business.

Hmmm... Maybe that's my problem. I'm not full of myself.

I don't have a big ego, but I'm confident that I can give every couple that chooses my service will receive the kind of entertainment they've envisioned.

On the mic I can be bigger than life. Outgoing, personable, & very friendly. :)

Off the mic, I'm actually pretty shy and don't like being in situations where I don't know anyone. :(

I'm with JFactor on this one. I have an ego just like anyone else. I try to keep it to a minimum, but at times it flies freely.

Behind my mixer I'm the guy who has to make it work and get the job done.

When I'm not behind the mixer I'm me.

We're not rock stars people! Rock stars play their own music!

We have a lot in common Jay

I dont call it ego I call it the character. My DJ persona is more a character I create. The trick is to keep the character on a short chain. It helps me with crowds because although I know I have the confidence to make the show special I am inherently shy

Jeff:

Excellent point.."the character"....

Yup, when I bartended there was "Kirby the Bartender" while I was on duty and "on stage" so to speak. I considered it kind of a performance and when I left the bar, I just became myself...

Pretty much the same when I'm DJing an event....

I believe that you need to be confident and comfortable being in front of people. I also believe that it does translate into an ego, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. It only becomes bad when your ego gets in the way of good judgement.
