I would recommend, nay nay and thrice nay, ORDER you to host it on a separate host than your website and link to it.

Easy top ten in a week ;)

D

Wordpress.com - To host your blog on their servers...
Wordpress.org - To download the Free software and run it on your own server(s)...

MOST hosts now have and installation of wordpress in their control panel, which makes it easy for you to host your own blog....

I would recommend that you host your blog on your own site...

Most people are, I was at first too. One command as root can wipe your entire computer or server including the operating system. We're all so used to point and click that entering commands and getting no feedback is scary to us.

One you learn the basics you will be much more confident. Here's the tutorial I used to learn importing and exporting databases quite a while ago: How to Backup Your MySql Database - vBulletin and Computer Help Forum . Greg the owner of that forum is a decent guy and helpful even if he's a little rough around the edges.

As far as I know 1and1 don't give SSH on their lower accounts and the access that they do give is terribly crippled. It's not that big of a deal for people who don't regularly use it.

I should note that 1&1 limits each database's size to 100MB. It will take you quite a while to fill it up with Wordpress but just something to think about for the future.

I clicked over and it looks like Wordpress's style is broken. I'm guessing it's a bad edit. Take a look at http://wordpress.org/extend/themes/ for free themes. They're all GPL'd which means your free to use and modify them. All are a good starting point you can keep the layout as is or add/change things to get the look you want.

Theme installation is straight forward here is a tutorial: http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes#Adding_New_Themes

I highly recommend any Wordpress newbies read over the First Steps with Wordpress. WP's documentation is top notch over there. :)

I'm on a dedicated server for now, but I am moving soon.. Thinking of another service, pay a little more, and be able to have...

LOL, the 1st link looks great... but scary... Last time moved my blog, I used phpMyAdmin which, because of the PHP upload limit, I had to break down the SQL file into byte sized files.... YUK....

Yep yer right on about 1and1... 100mb limit, which until now I have not seen the need for a larger DB...

To add to that Dan, there is a set of videos, FREE of charge at http://www.becomeablogger.com and it goes step by step through the upload and installation of Wordpress...

Kevin, to me it looks like you did the 1and1 install of wordpress... although I have 1and1 I have never used their wordpress installation... So you may be limited on what you can change... But I'm not sure of that...

If you want to take the trouble in learning how to upload your files to your account, set up the Wordpress, and upload your custom Themes... You may want to look at these videos ...

Alright, I got my first blog up but I still have some changes i want to make. I want to change the header font colour and the tagline. Maybe even the body font colour. I don't quite know, i'm still just playing around.

Nice Job.... Wow...

The header may be tough...

That is your background image... So you have to somehow photoshop out the money, feather, pen, rock and leaf... without breaking the flow of the wood grains...

http://www.blog.chrisehyoung.com/wp-content/themes/kanata/style.css

That is the CSS Style Sheet that will allow you to format all your text...

Take a close look at postTitle, entry, content, and... well gtg... but if you have an html editor... open up that file and look for those tags on the style.css file... change the # of the color, save it, and upload it and refresh your page to see your changes...

I love the blog Chris. I never intend to do one myself, for me, that would lead top more procrastination. Let us know when the widget is there to subscribe I'd like to read along

Thanks Dan. I'll probably play around with it again tomorrow and try to get that feedburner widget installed. I am computer competent but some things just seem to frustrate me. I am getting some good help though.

If you remember that plugins always go into your <blog root>/wp-content/plugins directory your good to go. Wordpress has one of the simplest plugins systems around. If you get lost you know where to find me.

I followed the instructions but I keep getting an installation failed error message. Help me Dan, please.:sqwink:

I've never seen a failed installation error but a failed activation error.

Try this take the zip and upload it through the admin panel. Open the admin panel > Plugins > Add New > Upload > Browse for the zip and upload the entire zip by hitting install now. Here's a screenshot for ya.
