I wasn't really planning at this time of doing radio but I had a hard time passing this one up

We are holding the East Coast Music Awards here next month and the offical stations are looking for "offical radio sponsors", (wich really means nothing but sounds good) for thier ECMA reports

3 stations, at least 22 30 second spots per station (possibly more) in all dayparts except midnight to six AM. The stations are 3,4 and 5 ranked in the market but have a better overall demographic for me than the top two. I also get "mentions" in the intro and extro of the reports.

$499.00. That's about $7.50/spot. No money down they bill over a 2 month period starting April 1 with no added charges

They also offered me the chance to voice the ads myself with either my copy or thiers

The demos should be in this week when I get them I'll post them here

On a related note, how many of you use Radio for promotion? Is it typically priced at a reasonable rate?

It really depends on the station and the market.

The stations I am working with used to have pretty much a monopoly on commercial radio here so the rates were high but a couple of new stations were opened ratings dropped and the rates dropped too.

Normally spots run about $25 on these stations but there are always specials going on.

I don't really expect a whole lot of return on this but if all goes right my new website should be launching about the same time and my van is getting lettered so it's kind of a big boom all at once.

Radio is good if you are running a special but unless you are prepared to run a long term imaging campagin, usually at great expense, it's not the best return on the dollar

You've gotten me thinking. Not radio in my case, but TV spots on certain channels- specifically Channels 12 & 61, which are the NJ News Channel, and it's affiliate, the NJ weather channel- both of which are popular here, and both of which target my area. Hmm.... Might also think about Channel 8, NJN- the NJ Network...

Gotta check rates..

Well, Jeff did sum it up well, but in Philly, most stations won't even talk to you unless you agree to spend at least $1500 on spots... some want way more than that. I know, because I tried to get on one station, and they gave me info. But they didn't want a DJ to advertise on the radio, they said. They wanted to give me a banner ad on their website.

Their reasoning was that on the radio, they felt it would look like they - WOGL - were endorsing my DJ service, and they didn't want any part of that.

Now I considered advertising on their website, until I saw that the cost was about 20x greater than Google, where I do advertise.

I run on the station I'm on. They plus me up spots instead of paying for them. 3 x per day from 6a-7p m-s.

I'll offer to voice them for you if you need.

Dave

yeah, radio is a real bargain these days.
many of the DJ's who are in our bridal shows run ads
but they have gotten less than average results.
as Jeff said, a lot depends on your market, and the station you run on.
cripes
I make radio commercials fofr a living
and I have never taken advantage of the chance to run on radio.

best you can do is try it (the price is nice, especially to be directly associated with a feature)
if it works out, great!

but I would try to voice them yourself
it makes the message more personal
and listeners may wonder why a DJ cannot voice his own spot.

OK so here is the finished product. I had a bit of a sore throat so my voice wasnt at its best that day. The sound quality is much better on the original ad than in the Youtube video
