I don't know if this is happening in your area(s) but we're about to be invaded by Cicadas. Seems like it's every 16 years or so and it's predicted they'll hit the air this week. If you've ever been through one of these, they're huge bugs and they go ape when there's noise involved. I can see a DJs job becoming impossible, not to mention an event getting wrecked. Have any of you guys ever dealt with this and, if so, how did you handle the situation?

The cicadas come in 13 and 17 year varieties in our parts. We've suffered through them the last few years, but have never had them effect a gig. This year they're saying it'll be pretty quiet for us. As for how to handle them...I let the cicada killers do the job nature intended them to do (think a ginormous wasp type thing...pretty passive to humans though).

Sounds like a prequel to the 'Biblical' Stink Bug invasion coming to the East Coast. FYI - there are no natural US predators to the Stink Bug. If you flip one over on its back and look, it says Made In China on their bellies. Just stand clear when they pass gas - which is also the code for more Stink Bugs to come and join the rally.

Tell me about it. I did a wedding three years ago at a farm in Pennsylvania. I had three systems set up; ceremony, cocktail, and reception. The ceremony and cocktails was outside and we were swamped with stink bugs. I used my Peavy escort for the ceremony, still have it, and am still picking stink bug carcasses out of it.

That's cuz y'er attracting all the females. The females are attracted to the male sounds. Because you showed up and overpowered them and tried to take their women, they attacked.

Nothin' like you showin' off to the girls with y'er lawnmower and all.

I don't know if that's true, but it sounds good.

:)

When I first moved to town we had a Cicada year. They usually are passive but I was running a lawnmower one afternoon and they absolutely ran me out of the yard. Something about the noise put them in attack mode. I'd had to think about the same thing happening on a gig.
They luv yer Rick Ryan! With a name like that yer make them chirp even more! LOL

Cicadas are good eatin'. Roasted for a snack or covered in chocolate for dessert.

Esp for those who have chocolate fountains....
