We've started utilizing our Business Facebook page for some giveaways to Friends and Charities.

The first giveaway was a copy of the Dave Ramsey Book, "The Total Money Makeover" and we just gave a copy of the book to the first person (Karl) who responded.

Next we asked some of our Facebook friends to name a Central IL Non-Profit that they supported. We put 6 of them in a poll and asked people to vote for their favorite and we would award the winning non-profit $100. That ended with the winner being Make-A-Wish of Illinois (Central IL office) and we've already sent them their check for $100.

For the first time out, we thought it went decently and had some fun getting people to get involved in supporting their "favorite."

Couple of observations and changes that we're going to make for the next one as we're committing to at least a 3-6 month trial period.
1.) Make sure that if the non-profit has a Facebook presence we "like" them before putting them in the poll.
2.) This time we're going to select the non-profits.
3.) Only 4 will be in the poll instead of 6.
4.) This month will have completely different non-profits to vote for.
5.) We're probably going to shorten the voting period as we felt it went on too long and didn't have a sense of "urgency."

We're hoping that these little "tweaks" will help this grow. We've seen an increase in traffic on our Facebook page as a result, which someday will translate into better name recognition (or we hope.) Plus we like "giving" as both Coreen and I feel that we're pretty darned blessed in our lives.

Tonight we launched a different giveaway.

A local photographic artist that I went to High School with had a print of iconic buildings (see photo below) that she was selling. I loved the print and asked her if I could buy 2 (1 for our house and 1 as a giveaway) and what we wanted to with it. I assured her that she would get complete credit for her work and that we wanted others to be exposed to her work at http://www.galemyersphotography.com.

We kept the rules simple:

How to win Gale Myers' photo print of iconic Springfield, IL buildings: 1) tag yourself (only once!) in this photo. 2) Deadline is 11/18/11, 7 pm, CST. 3) Winner's name will be drawn at random and posted on our Facebook page. Winner has 48 hours to private message us a valid US mailing address. 4) If we do not hear in 48 hours, we will draw another name.

Thanks Jon, we're trying utilize social media one step beyond just posting stuff about us. I know a lot of people "poo-poo" the idea of giving back to their communities but we feel very strong about doing so and this is another way that we can do so and maybe even have a little fun by hopefully getting others involved in the process.

Like anything, we're going to give it some time to mature and we'll see if these approaches have any impact.

keep me posted my friend Im anxious to see innovative ideas and how they work out for others. It allows me to consider my own creativity and think outside the proverbial Container.

Yes much kudos for the effort! We have just begun with our FB page but the stations page is doing ok. You are on the right track to a succesful campaign as we have discussed some the the exact same stratigies. Also discussed was some sort of "scavenger hunt" with pictures. I will keep you posted after the launch.

Kiby I love the ideas and love even more the idea you are supporting local and giving back that is so important. These ideas will definatly create a TOMA among those who "like" your page.

What I am not seeing (and maybe be missing) is a component to the plan that creates new "Likes" to the page. The people that are already on your page are important but with just a sendout on the page a week you an create TOMA it's with others that you really need to create it

I have a friend in the local area that discovered a very unique Facebook marketing campagin I plan to hare when I get some more details it might interest you Kirby

Thanks Jeff and you are correct that "component" hasn't been implemented as we're still kicking around a few ideas and will always welcome constructive criticism and advice...

One error we made in the print giveaway was that we didn't restrict the posting of the pic, so a few people tagged themselves in "other posts." Completely our fault and the next time around that situation will be rectified. The girl in Indiana was thrilled to win it as she was born and raised in Springfield and she actually went to Jr. High School with the creator of the print.

Our next $100 donation poll went up on Sunday evening and this time we only provided 2 organizations (Friend-in-Deed which is a yearly program which is spearheaded by the local paper & The Salvation Army of Springfield) to vote on. We also shortened the length of time for voting (ends on Monday (28th) at 7 pm). Unfortunately Friend in Deed does not have a Facebook presence, but The Salvation Army does, so we made sure that posts made by us are hot-linked to their page to help spread the word. I also went through and asked many of my FB contacts to vote, some did....others did not...

If anyone would like to cast a vote, please feel free to do so... and remember "NO SALESMAN WILL CALL!"

Speaking of the Salvation Army, we did a 2 hour shift last Saturday and will be doing another 2 hour shift this coming Saturday after Thanksgiving. We'll probably pick up a couple of other shifts in December. This is only the 2nd year that we've participated in "ringing the bell" for them and we've enjoyed doing what we can to help out...

Kirby way to go its always trial and error to perfect anything. Who knows you keep doing the bell ringing maybe Hillshire Farms will have you working their Kiosk next Christmas. Or they will put a white beard on you and a red suit.

I've already got the "white beard" but thanks to "Just For Men" it appears to be "non-white." ;)

Stats for last months $100 charity donation poll:

1,212 People Reached · 75 People Talking About This

Big step up from the normal amount of people that are "reached" or have contact with our normal posts.

Part "2".... Coreen and I dragged out buns out of bed and rang the bell for the Salvation Army this morning! We've enjoyed this experience so much, we're adding 1 more shift (maybe 2) in December.

After the votes were tallied, The Salvation Army of Springfield will be this month's recipient of the $100 donation by our business.

We also started another giveaway promo similar to the poster giveaway (they tag themselves and we give it away). ;) This time it's a copy of the Dave Ramsey's, "Total Money Makeover" revised 3rd edition.

Our monthly non-profit donation poll has been expanded for the Christmas season:

December is the time for giving and for counting blessings, so for this month's give-away, we are writing FOUR checks! $100 to the top vote-getter; $75 to second; $50 to third and $25 to fourth. Vote for your favorite non-profit organization, then PLEASE click the "share" button and ask your friends to do the same. Voting ends Wednesday, Dec, 28th at 7 PM, CST, so we can mail the checks before the end of the year.

Here's the FB Link if anyone cares to look at the nominated organizations, cast a vote or share the poll...

you and Coreen are spreading awesome goodwill Kirby. Its a pleasure to see you giving back as you two have been blessed.

Max "The Spoiled" joined us for our 3rd and final (for this year) bell ringing for the The Salvation Army of Springfield. I believe that he helped increase the donations by at least 20% due to his charming face and disposition.

Merry Christmas...
