We're doing some tweaking...

I'll disagree with that one Danno. I've never had a double post.

I think it has to do with people getting click happy, when they don't see instant results.

Granted, the db has been slow of late (mainly queries, as best I can tell). But the double posts are user errors, IMHO...
Thanks Rick, I've noticed slow commits myself but could be click happy folks. I'm talking like 10-15 seconds to submit a reply; That's not a show stopper but I'm really not happy with it. I'd like to blame it all on vBulletin but I've seen bigger vB 4 boards hum along pretty well. Who knows what they're running hardware wise though. Our hosting is far from budget hosting and we're rarely using anything more than 70% of the available RAM so throwing more money at hosting probably won't help much.

Our new forum is going on a fresh VPS that I'm going to really work on tweaking out of the box.

I'd bet on that -- 20k+ posts, and I've never had a double.

Patience is a virtue... :)

Why not just put the box in yer place, so you have complete control...? Might even be cheaper...

Don't have the upload bandwidth to do something like that but it'd be awesome until Road Runner shut me down, lol

Nope, I used to get souble posts often and it was definitely due to pages freezing up. Sometimes a reply would time-out altogether.
As far as replying, I definitely see a faster quick-reply.

I have over 20k posts, and never a double -- why is that then...?

I take it back, everything is hanging for me right now

They have blue pills that should help with that... yorofl:

What service level do you have? I have the 30/5 level, and I could easily host a forum here. Granted you get a TON of posts per day, but text based posts like these use barely any bandwidth, and I would say that even a 2gb upload would do you just fine. You should get a LAMP box or a WAMP box (Linux (or Windows) - Apache - MySQL - PHP) and run a test forum site. Get some people here to post on it a few times a day (I would help out, for sure) and see if you can handle it while still doing whatever you need to do. You could easily run a WAMP server on your PC (you have a PC, right?) that you are using now. I had to host the JyMix site on my machine a while back, and it worked out just fine. Its not like running a shoutcast server or anything, where you have a constant stream you are uploading, and have people connecting to that stream, each one using X amount of bandwidth. This is intermittent hits, and it really doesn't use much.
I can help you set up and admin the site/server if you'd like, and I am sure some of the other IT guys here would help!

I am guessing you have a very small ping to the server. You may be closer to the actual box or, maybe you just don't have to make as many hops... or possibly the hops that you do have to make have small pings as well. Who knows.
You obviously have a much better connection to the site though :)

Sorta doubt that, since I'm now 1500 miles away from where I was before...

When the site is really slow, after I hit submit, I just walk away and do something else until it finishes its thing. I also preview every post before I hit submit.

But, just for S&G, I'm going to start an experiment thread, and see if I can force a double post... :)

I run localhost stuff already but I don't have the infrastructure to keep a site up reliably. Backup power, redundant connections, etc. Heck it would take me 2-3 days just to upload an offsite backup and by then it would be out of date.

Asides residental ISPs have specific clauses against running servers.

That has nothing to do with how 'far' you are from the server - but I'm thinking you know this already.

Yeah, but it does depend. How many routers are in the way, etc...

I'm using ComCrap now, which is not the greatest thing since sliced bread. It works, but it can slow to a crawl at times. I just don't hit the submit button more than once, and I always preview a post before I do hit submit. More than likely, my post is already cached.

I have ComCrap too. It's actually using a newer OS than my toaster is (I didn't believe the hype at first, but it really is). I don't ever hit the submit button more than once either. At times, I may be given a choice of 'stay on page' or 'leave page', other times I'm not presented with a choice, and other times it takes absolutely FOREVER. All have resulted in double posts. Most times it's ok.

If you get a "leave page", it means you've opted to leave the post before submitting. That was a feature Danno put in a couple months ago.

I've read the code for vB, and it's almost impossible to double post, unless you (or your browser) are a train wreck.

it likely all depends on which pant leg you put on first but in the big scheme who gives a flying Fack? Some people love to concern themselves with the most silly things. Who cares if a DOUBLE POST POPS UP NOW AND AGAIN? OH MY GOD IM YELLING. SORRY ABOUT THAT!!! DAMN CAP LOCK!!

Ricky, I've never opted to leave the post before submitting if I hit the submit button. Me and my browser (good song) may be train wrecks too but that's not what this post is about.

:)
