Why do some put down others for not being a computer DJ?

I'm asking this question because i've seen on this and other forums like this where some DJs don't really consider a DJ a real DJ or take them seriously if they are not using a computer. What's the big deal? As long as they can get the job done and they satisfy the client and their guest why does it matter.

I find it's more conveniet to be able to use my laptop and external HD along with the Drnon 6000 controller then having to carry books of cd's. When i first got started in 1981 we were using turntables and had to lug around crates of records to DJ with. My how things have changed for the good and the bad.

Just remember when there was a time nobody was using a computer. Most were using cd's and then someone designed a way to use a computer. The first DJ i saw using a computer was using a regular pc. He did a fine job. Years later a ton of DJs are now using a computer. A DJ friend of mine made the switch a while ago. He used to use cd's. If he were still using cd's he still would be a very good DJ!

I say it's not what you use but if you know what you are doing with what you and are the people happy with the work you do.

The upside to using a computer is it elimanates having to carry several books of cd's. The down side is that it has caused a lot of wannabe DJs to spring up thinking all you need to do is to get some gear, bring a laptop, HD and a DJ software program and that makes them a DJ. That also is a big reason why the market for DJs to make a decent wage has dropped tremendously. There are these newbies who clutter the market and don't have a business plan in place that will help them to grow and lead them in the direction they want to go.
So they come out here and some turn out to be very good. Some learn over time that as they get better and more people like what they do to increase their rates. While other stay the same which is a big reason this industry is hurting right now. Not for everyone but a lot of us.

The bottom line is use what works best for you and keep working on making your busines better. The tough part are those who think this is just a quick way to earn some cash. They don't know the hard work and dedication it takes to become a really good professional at this and make a decent wage.

I'm a CD only DJ. Works for me.

Mix, you won't be a real DJ until you stop worrying about whether others take you seriously or not ..

You folks got it all wrong, real DJs drink skim milk.

Crap .. I'm not a real DJ because I don't use scrims and now it's because I won't drink skim milk ...

Sorry Steve, but if you would like to be a wanna-be we'll allow you to drink any kind of milk you wish.

I'll have to swim in the kiddie pool too because I drink 2% milk.

Anyone got some floatie's I can borrow?

We'll just say my buddy didn't make it to class that day.

Always made it to class :)

Funny thing -- when I was in college, we'd hang out in the parking lot at 7:30 in the morning, and 3 of us would down a pint of schnapps before class. Guess who taught the labs, made the programming assignments, and got the 4.0's ;)
