Can't tell if my mixer is bad or my computer or both.

USB mixer by Numark and a Win7 Lappy.

Originally wouldn't install, then rebooted, installed fine. Ran for 30 minutes and the decks on the software kept turning but one side of the mixer wasn't producing sound. Then tested the mixer again...now working again? GEEZ

Any tried and true methods for definitively finding out the problem?

I'm getting a wierd feeling like my lappy (3 years old) is maybe getting some flakiness going and my mixer (2 years old purchased used) is also getting flaky.

Before I dig em out and 12 hr. torture test em I thought I'd drop a line here to see what your system of trouble shooting would be.

Win7 Lappy
Numark X1 USB mixer. (2 soundcards built in...so 2 usb ports)

Jeremiah,

I'd try replacing the cables first, but I'm guessing you already tried that...

The connectors on the lappy and/or mixer may be showing signs of wear -- that requires somebody who can put connectors in -- not an easy process. It you wiggle the cables while playing, and it connects back up, then you've pretty much figured out it's the cable or connector.

There's a program available called USBView, it's an old MS utility. It's not meant for end users, it's a programmer's diagnostic tool, and hard to find. I have it though, and it might give you some indications, although it's a bit hard to read for non-programmers, as almost everything is in Hex. If you can't find it, let me know -- it's a tiny program, and I can email you a copy.

replace cables
replace drivers
replace anything that helps run software etc

hopefully that should help
or

it can even be a dry joint on the motherboard
or even on the Numark board inside!
it might even need a good clean who knows

well no videos was found sorry so I cant see whats happening :(

oh well thats you tube for you lol

1) switches on the back (for usb) . Are they in the right position?
2) Everything I've read states it's not Win 7 capable; that may be the issue
I can get this mixer to work as I have for 2-3 years now...Where did you see its not W7 compatible? That's terrible!

W7 seems to be fine. I think its the lappy....I dunno...wierd...Watch the vid and see what you think. Thanks again

actually take out the BATTERY from the laptop and just run the laptop on power only and see what happens there

let us know what happens there

could also be that battery!

you can buy genuine hp batteries on ebay as well

anyway let us know later!

ahhh good idea!

ok how did that do ?

trouble is if your updating windows with auto updates, it could have changed a driver somewhere and you would never know it

thats why I am very weary on what updates are done and I can remove them as I go

plus the drivers for the newmark could be old and never get updated

could be loads of other reasons

anyway have a nice day - hope it gets fixed

still thinking its an onboard power issue with the laptop/battery/charger. Connects and installs perfectly with no lappy power attached. Driver seams fine...can't wait to try again.

I did an auto update on my wife's laptop and could not connect to the wireless network in the house. Found the update - uninstalled it and the network card; reinstalled using the proper driver and corrected the issue...

I had the same thing happen to me with a wifi USB adapter. funny
