DjDennis

RIP- My Dad (2011), Sister (2013) and Mum (2017)
This is what he asked me (a new Dj starting out)

(Even I am actually looking at this as well....)

here are some names that he has on his hard drive (he is now all mp3)
but since he is transferring a lot over from Vinyl and or CD he is a little put back by some names
if they are truly spelt right or the pronunciation on the way its spelt correct

here is a small list:

Brian Ferry or Bryan Ferry ?

3 Doors Down or Three Doors Down ?

The Four Tops or The 4 Tops or Four Tops ??

The Offspring or Offspring ?

The Pretenders or Pretenders ?

as you can see this is Touching on some of what I have even questioned myself
people say one thing and write another or write one way and say another

so just them fe above (while I still check the real spelling on some of the group names above)

but there maybe a lot more that I havent even touched on

thanks if anyone can really Clarify this to ALL of us!!

It doesn't really matter -- your software should filter it down.

A couple examples (this is how Rockit works BTW):

Type in Ferr, and do a search -- you'll find what you need in milliseconds. Type in Tops, and you'll get the results you need, whether it's "Four Tops" or "4 Tops".

I generally type in 2-3 letters, and I get what I want. Then I just click on the title or artist header, and it puts everything in order -- takes less than a second to find anything. So, it doesn't really matter, as long as you have a few letters of any field in the tag.

no he doesnt want to use software for now

9/10 even they have things in wrong

I have had that for years where it can be say Bryan or Brian so what is it ??

ok lets see who else can work this out

thanks Rick (so far)

Shane at times the record is too Damaged so he buys them from itunes and some of them are never spelt correctly either

I also have noticed that with the names Brian and Bryan

So, what is he playing them with then, since he's all MP3 -- and how is he searching for them...?

So, in your example above, I would just type in "bry", if that didn't work, type in "bri". That's why the need for software, as opposed to using a Windows search, which is very slow even on indexed drives/folders.

Just for S&G, I just did a Windows search (on a fully indexed internal 7200 rpm drive in Windows). I searched for "bruce" meaning Springsteen. It took a couple minutes to come up with the results, and it only showed about 90 some percent of the files I actually have (I have all of Bruce's music).

Hence the need for a library database loaded into memory on the DJ software. The speed difference is awesome. I did the same test in Rockit, and in less then 10 ms, I had all of his songs listed, and ready to go.

Dennis I understand what you are asking. Your friend is entering first Data and he wants to "File" that Data as correctly as he possible can. A search in the software at this time has nothing to do with the question that you are asking as some may seem to think. I would see if the artist has an official website and if there is one, I would go by the spelling seen there. For example I typed in on Google "brian ferry website" and it came up with
Bryan Ferry - The Official Site
www.bryanferry.com/index2.html
The official Bryan Ferry website. ... BRYAN FERRY - CONTINUE TO SITE ...

This tells me the Correct Spelling is Bryan Ferry. I hope this answers your question.

also keep in mind that not ALL official websites are run by the folks named or are correct.i've seen albums from various places with different spellings.singers, musicians and song writers do sometimes change the spelling of their name slightly for whatever reason!!

That may be true but usually the Official Websites has some form of approval by someone who has authority such as the Artist, Agent or Label.

I always use the written out for numbers - four not 4, two not 2...etc...keep it consistent and you can't go wrong.

And I don't use "The"...Rolling Stones, Mavericks, Supremes, Four Tops is how I rip and tag.

Use whatever works 4 you..oops...for you.

Consistency is the key. If you know you always spell out Two, Three, Four than that is what you search for.

Dan same thing with things like

3 doors down do they use the number 3 or three doors down ?

what do you do about say bewitched there is some sort of * in there isnt there

or try 2pac is it one word or - 2 pac ??

say or say the group 5ive is it spelt like that or do people write Five or 5ive ???

you can see why I am asking
its all the strange ways that things are written

I am searching online so the way groups are spelling are correct but
at times when you have to get listings from CDs that have been ripped from them
they are done wrong :(

I am still looking at catalogs of mine - what I have and how they are suppose to be written

NOT TO BE SEARCHED as if you search on some names and they are spelt wrong then your outta luck

try CASEY CHAMERS is it with a C or a KASEY CHAMBERS ?

so now you work it out!!
