More bad retail news. Lots of job losses are coming. Both Ruby Tuesdays, and Macy's made these announcements today.

Macy's is closing another 100 stores

Honestly, does anybody still shop at MACYs? I don't think I've purchased anything from there in 4 years.

Online retailers like Amazon are KILLING traditional stores. Sears, JC Penney...I bet these two companies are next to announce store closures. ...America's malls are in serious trouble.

When you don't understand your market and make the necessary changes along the way .. you become the dinosaur.

This is only part of the reason malls are in trouble, People don't interact any more, I was at a major league baseball game yesterday, as I looked around I saw probably 75% of the people with their eyes glued to their phones, come on people you paid $50 to watch this game gand you are more interested in whats on your phone, The mall used to be a place to not only shop but to socialize

in teh US there are 45 sf of retail space for every man woman and child. Most of any country. Second is England...with 9 sf.

So yeah, retail here is way overbuilt.

I never find what I want / need at macy's - I do better at boscov's.

I buy more online than I did 10 years ago, or 20 (ok..no online 20 years ago LOL) but only some of it is by 'choice' - it's not like i can go get the GoRack locally at ANY price. Same for many other things I buy...where you gonna get GTD mics for example? Or books- my county and NO bookstore..there may be one sorta thing at the mall and of course 2 walmarts, but we never had a 'real' bookstore (inde or barnes and noble).

We had a (samll) best buy but now they've closed..sears too...the sears store at $26m in sales in 2005..and $6m last year. So the options of where to even buy somethings is limited.

The talk this morning on TV is that many people under 25 or 30 grew up shopping online..and that the 'retail experience' needs to change. They talked about how one retailer bought a pizza chain and now sells pizza IN their store..some Harley Davidson dealers have been doing this for decades.

How bad will things get another 10 years down the road. All Virtual.

With more and more brick and mortar businesses closing their doors that means more and more jobs displaced. Mcdonalds, and other fast food outlets are planning to automate more which means they will hire less people. We don't manufacture a whole lot these days.

Where will all these jobs be replaced with? I foresee another major jobs crisis occurring in the next 6 to 24 months over all of this.

I believe Amazon is already taking over the world of retail. They are continually growing, but they are one company, and an online retailer. They will only account for a small portion of the lost jobs moving forward.

I have almost no reason to go to retail other than to browse, I can usually get it cheaper online and have it delivery to my door within 24 hours, soon to be same day for some stuff

Yup...Amazon is doing same day delivery in my area if the item is in stock at the local location. I ordered a swimming shirt a few weeks ago from Amazon...came the very next day only because it was coming from out of area.

Get this. I ordered the Kirkland brand Athletic Shoes from Costco. I have owned 2 pairs in the past, and managed to get 18 months useout of each set. They came out with a new design this time, but it has a Memory Foam insole like last time, BUT it's removable now. Anyway, they only charge $16.99 for the shoes. Since I'm a member shipping is free. They shipped the shoes from California to Maryland 3 day ups select for Free. I had the shoes in 2 days. I don't know how they are making any money on selling these shoes at that price and free quick shipping. BUT I'm happy!

These shoes quality are comparable to Reebok or Sketchers shoes that would cost $59.99. I still akso buy name brand shoes like Reebok, Skechers etc. every year too, but if I can order a pair of nice tennis shoes for $18.01 with tax and free shipping in 2 days to my door. Why really go and buy $60 or $70 shoes at the store?

Most Walmart stuff is two days for me too

Last time I went to macys I enjoyed their service. Friendly and helpful. But there are SAs at Walmart that are also friendly and helpful. They just don't dress as nice.

One of the reasons businesses are going under is because of online buying. No need to got to a store and buy stuff unless absolutely necessary. That's the reason you hardly see any record stores or should I say now CD stores around. You can either download a song, CD or simply buy it online and be done with it. We've become a lazy society. We want things right now which is another thing too.

While outdated stores close, relevant chains grow. A Cabella 's just opened in Cleveland and a Menard's is opening soon.

Old outdated indoor malls are all but gone here, but many "open air" shopping facilities have replaced them.

Ruby Tuesday may be going, but in the shopping area near me, they've been building more and more, added a Yard House, many other restaurants and stores.

There could be a need to go to a store, but the stores have to change their customer's experience. I'd go to Sears, or Macys, or Walmart or Target more often if they had something to draw me in. They don't .. unless I need something right now. Stores have to change .. just like small stores had to when the Walmarts came calling.

Wife and I went to Target today (Her favorite store). She gets her womens needs items there. She also has the red card and gets 5% off every time she uses it.

I ended up buying a new pair of Jean Shorts for $12.99. ...I seem to go through jean shorts every 2 years. One of my pairs from 2 summers ago I deemed too tight on me, so that is why I bought another pair LOL.

I then proceeded to spend $19 on lunch at Dairy Queen for 3 , and that included dessert...not bad. Their 5 buck lunch combo worked for me.

Sears seems to still be in the market when it comes to Appliances. How many stores are there really to choose from to go buy a new fridge, washer/dryer, new stove? They seem to be steady on that stuff. Their craftsmen tools still sell, but they are losing market share on the tools to other brands. Everything else at Sears is where they are falling way short. Their clothing is too expensive, and generally outdated styles from 10 years ago. The clothing section is also poorly kept up. With TVs and electronics they usually cant compete on offerings compared to online other stores or online at all.

I had lunch at DQ today as well .. 4 piece chicken basket and a medium Blizzard. And I go to Target for food mostly .. they have a decent selection and pricing is less than our normal store .. Stop & Shop, so I stock up on pantry items (soups, cereals, drinks, etc.). For appliances, I go to a local appliance store that matches pricing (and generally beats it) and can get anything .. plus they deliver and install. I don't use them often, but have gone back a few times over the past 20+ years.

If stores want to survive, they need to offer different , better, or cheaper products and service .. I won't shop if it's the same .. as it's far easier and many times it's cheaper to go online and buy.

FYI, Stop & Shop is owned by Giant of PA (Supermarket chain) .. who also bought the Giant in Maryland. The Giant in MD used to have their letters done differently.

I was in Sears not long ago, in the Craftsman dept, looking at Torque Wrenches. I forgot how much they wanted but there was no lifetime warranty on them anymore (specifically, the torque wrenches). Hopped over to Home Depot and Lowe's to look at their offerings - found a Kobalt TW for a little more than the Craftsman - with a lifetime warranty. It also covered a little more, weight wise, than the Craftsman wrench did.

I have some screwdrivers from a few years ago from Kobalt that are still in great shape, so I had no issues buying a TW from them.

Change how?
What will draw you in?

Service? macy's etc - and I see that segment shrinking the most. Be that economics (too few people making the money to go there), alternatives (walmart, target) or online/newer younger buyers.

Music? dancing girls? a pizza shop? Target has a Starbucks, walmart 1 a duncan donuts, walmart 2 a subway.

I'll pay a bit more to get it now. I can order it - and it comes to me, nice, but it can (with amazon's free shipping) take a week at times longer.
Locally I will pay with my time and gas.

Today I went to the gas station, mcdonalds, liquor store, home depot, walmart and two car parts stores (needed a feeler guage and the first one had none..but then I didn't ask for help..i googled teh other store and found they had what i wanted in stock, found it on their shelves (5 choices!), and done, i'm home.

I also bought a candy bar...an impulse buy..does that exist in online shopping? If not it's gonna hurt profit margins at some point I'd think. But then maybe the trend is away from impulse buys?

Thats like one of my hobbies, the stores for it have been slowly closing steadily over the past five years give or take, and the main reason is because they cant compete with online stores, I know for me, I do the bulk of my ordering online, I save so much money. For some things , its still cheaper most of the time to buy local . I import probably 3k worth of stuff from Japan yearly , and those items have a mark up of about 50% here , so even with shipping via EMS or FedEx, I still save a ton of money, but I also do large shipments , so my cost per item is around $7 give or take.

The only place I wont order from anymore unless its a from a third party seller is Amazon, I get to pay sales tax for orders that Amazon fullfills and ships, and more so after a order we made a few weeks ago, it took that almost a week to ship a Kindle that was listed as instock. Once it shipped, it took about 24 hours to get to get to us.

I don't pay taxes on Amazon for business purchases, there is a form you can fill out, technically if you buy something fo non business use and don't pay tax you are committing a crime those purchases are supposed to be reported and taxes paid
