Whats a typical class reunion like?

Hey Guys!

Feels like it's been forever since I posted here but I was just wondering how Class Reunions in your area are typically handled. Is it cocktail music for a bit then dancing? Are there a bunch of speeches? Just want to get a general ideal of what class reunions are like from the DJ's side of the table. Thanks

I just DJed my 20th year class reunion last month, and all they wanted was 80's and 90's music all the time. While dinner was being served, I just had the music at a low volume. There were very little speaches, but lots of dancing. It really depends on what the group wants.

It all depends on the group. I did a 40 year reunion last year and we did alot of activities. Recently I did a 20 year reunion...there was very little dancing...mainly they just talked with one another.

In any case, I have never had a difficult one, though I have only had a few.

There's a big difference if it is the first reunion since graduation. That's why 10 year reunions are usually a lot of talking. You have to just respect that and play for those who do want to dance. Sometimes a lot will dance, but not always. Twenty year and up reunions seem to be more responsive to the DJ. There are games, awards, quizes, etc at them all. I would recommend getting info on the games and such so you can try to find good music beds for them. Sometimes I bring my own games if they don't have any planned.

I have only done a half dozen or so, but each was seriously different from the others. I had one where they danced like crazy. One where they were not interested, and one 10 year where they didn't know what they wanted. It was nuts. The "cool" people still thought that they were cool, and the rest of them thought they were still stupid. It was a hard dynamic.

So far the one's that I've done have been more talking, slideshow, more talking, a bit of drinking and eating, more talking.

Easy gigs for the most part.

Now, for the only 2 reunions that I've gone to (5th & 7th), we had live bands, lots of drinking and other substances and lots of drinking. Basically they were drunken parties with a bunch of people I used to go to school with...

Doing a 50th class reunion next Saturday. They already told me don't expect to much dancing. I'm going to sell Viagra at the event. It's going to be the senior prom all over again.

Well, I WAS going to answer the question in the title of the thread, but there will be very little that is "typical" about a 50th reunion.

Have fun and let us know how it goes!

You can find the years favorite music on many google searches and use that as your base. Then go with requests throughout the evening. My first reunion in Oregon was a class of 77. I was so off the cuff. Opening with the number one song of 77. You Light Up my Light-Debbie Boone I back spun the song and then went directly into Get Down To Nighr. The dancefloor was packed from then on. I did a couple things along with this but it set the party off and went the duration.

Yeah I got to agree with Hugh. You can really tell who was who in high school and sadly it hasn't changed.

I always found you have 1/3 who want the old music, 1/3 who want brand new music because they never get old, and 1/3 who don't care.

One of the reunion planning companies that uses my services told me they are cutting back on expenses this year.(guess that means they start with the DJ) I have only had one contract for a class reunion this entire year. I have found more of a market providing them projector/screens for slide shows.
