I just ordered another speaker bag today for one of my two 8" monitors (Alto TX8). I bought a second QSC K8TOTE because it's the only speaker bag I could find for 8" powered PA speakers. The bag, at $61 is almost half the cost of the speaker, but now I'll finally have bags for all my speakers. The price of the QSC bag was higher than the cost of the bags for my 12" and 15" speakers. I had been keeping the TX8's in their original boxes, but they were not easy to handle and did not look very good.
As someone new to mobile DJing, I was surprised to discover how much bags, covers and cases cost. Of the total investment I've made in equipment, about 20% of the cost has been in bags, covers and cases. I've seen other DJ's show up with their gear in tattered boxes, tote bins, cloth sacks, and in some instances, no protection at all, and to me it just looks unprofessional. Every piece of equipment has its own bag, cover, or case, all in black except for my controller case, which only came in grey-green; sort of like matching luggage. I've even tried to buy the same brand as much as possible. Some of my bags I had to have custom made. I have a table that collapses down to 30"x30"x8", so it was difficult to find a standard size bag to fit. The cost of the custom bag ($119) was in line with what I paid for other standard size bags. Also, I could not find a source for bags to cover Alto TSSub15's, so I had to order those custom made. They were only $70 each, which was actually less than similar sub transport bags/covers I've seen.
The only thing I lack at this point is something to carry my cables and tools in. Right now I'm using plastic tote bins, but what I want is a couple of good size utility bags. Below is a pic of my audio equipment (primary and backup) just prior to loading it in the minivan.
I know it doesn't look like it, but it all fits in my Chrysler minivan with room to spare.
I'd be very interested to know how others are protecting and hauling their gear. Post pictures if you have 'em.
