Ok,
I'm starting to do video and I'm in the process of buying some 1TB hard drives. Now the question is...

Maxtor or Lacie?

Pros?
Cons?

Which one? ;)

I've been watching ebay and prices are all over the place, but if you are getting a 1TB 3.5" I've seen them for as low as $110 with free shipping. I'm thinking Western Digital or Seagate. Here's a Cavalry 7200 rpm, 16mb buffer drive for $110 with free shipping and I would bet that it has either a WD or Seagate drive inside. I own one Cavalry, had it for about a year.

Here's a WD from Newegg for $120.

Seagate for $115.

I know, you asked about LaCie or Maxtor. Really, I'm thinking they're all about the same. They're mechanical and prone to failure. In a year or three, solid state drives may be competitive pricewise to mechanical drives. At that point we'll have a storage solution available that's much less prone to failure.

Internal or external? How serious are you about video (enough to get by or everything there is)? What kind of files types are you leaning to (.mpg, .vob, .mp4, .avi )

Currently, with about 9,000 .vob video files and they are taking 1.5tb space. I use a dual 1tb drives in a single external enclosure (Cavalry 2tb) configured as one huge drive (and a second Cavalry 2tg for identical backup, and two 1tb Seagate externals for a third "just in case").

I've always been partial to Seagate brand drives since my dealings with exclusively SCSI drives way back when however the manufacturing techniques and locations are now almost the same. To me, it no longer matters much more than an emotional attachment or brand loyalty.

Thanks for the links Wiz but I'm buying them in Mexico and the only available ones that I may trust are the Maxtor and Lacie the other cheap alternatives I just don't trust. WD down here is available but only up to 320 GB. I'm looking at buying 4 of them, unfortunately the pricing down here is @$250.00 per drive (I miss the low prices up there ;) ).

I'm going to go all out on video Cap, but you got to remember these are for personal parties, I'm not in the biz I just like the toys ;). (These are external drives).

Thanks!!!

None of the US companies ship to Mehico?

They do, but then they nail you at customs with taxes (100%) plus other BS fees so it ends up over $350.00 per drive. So the best choice is buying from a local dealer and let them deal with customs ;)

Given the choice of those 2 I would pick Maxtor. I've had many of them and never had trouble with any of them. I still have an old 4 gig Maxtor I use for storage of old pics and contracts. I plug it in every couple of months to do backups and it firs up no problem. Damn thing must be handy 10 years old or more

They can sneak millions of illegals over the border but you can't get a couple of HD's in?:sqcool:

I would avoid the maxtors, although trouble has been reported about the LaCie's I feel they have a much better all-around product for the price. The maxtors I have used 2 of the 3 constantly gave us problems, and the 3rd did have intermittent issues, unreliable. LaCie, only one issue, of dead hardrive, later corrected itself.

It's easy to get the illegals in up there hell the officials probably help them (Of course after getting some $$$$), but getting the stuff in is another story, they've got X-Rays, etc. at the airport and if you don't declare the stuff you're screwed.

Driving in it's the same thing they go over the car completely, it's just not worth it. Besides with the economic troubles they want to nail you for even the smallest thing just to get $$$$ out of you ;)

Cap is right I love Seagate and they have one of the best warranties out there.

Well I bought 4 Maxtor's, made by Seagate so I guess that's good, I also bought a LaCie 2TB, let's see how that one behaves. I'm like Cap, backup, backup, backup, you can never have too much (As other things in life) :D:D:D
