I'm also looking to buy 1 or 2 blacklights. However, the school dances that I DJ at don't turn off all of the lights--there may be one or two ceiling lights left on in the gym. Would the blacklight effect work if these lights are left on or should I not bother in purchasing them?

Your help is appreciated!

If they leave the lights on, forget about the black lights. What you need to do before purchasing the black lights is buy some regular parcans that you can spread around the room for ambiant light, that way the gym lights can be turned off; I like to use red or blue.

I can't understand why DJs who do school dances buy all this fancy gear before they own the basics...

I guess it comes down to what the kids like--they don't like basic lights--they like lights that are exciting, flashing, strobing, etc

You are missing the point... For them to enjoy the "exciting, flashing, strobing, etc" you need to get the gym lights off; having the gym lights off is "what the kids like".

To do that you need to fill the room with a nice ambiant colored light, this is cheap and easy to accomplish with parcans.

The parcans are only there for that purpose, they are not there to mesmerize the kids... Lol :sqwink:

I'm not sure if anybody mentioned this...but when looking for a blacklight, I like to open the box and make sure the fixture is in fact black. Guitar Center screwed me over a few times with this before I took my business elsewhere.

I think the problem that I have is that the people in charge of the dance don't want to turn off the lights regardless of amibiant lighting or not...if the students want the lights off the sponsors won't do it.

To show you how uptight they are one adult in charged questioned me about the lyrics to Hips Don't Lie by Shakira. I said there was nothing inappropriate about it--she then grumbled as she walked off.

Maybe at the other schools that I DJ I can do the amibiant lighting so all of the lights can be turned off.

How many lights do you use for ambiant lighting--one for each wall?

Outlaw, I hear ya on the uptight parents... If you reassure them that you will have adequate light, they should be fine. Place parcans around the room pointing up to the ceiling and have them kill the gym lights and get their opinion.

As for the other schools, give it a shot. One red or blue gel can on each wall does not give off that much light but then I use only 100 watt halogens in my cans. If you use a yellow, then yes, you will get a lot of light. So it is kind of hard for me to say how many you'd need since I don't know what wattage bulbs or which colored gels you'd be using. I would say 4 cans for a cool school and 8 for an uptight one... Lol

Thanks, I'll give it a shot.
