WOW! 3 hours ago I got my first reply from a wedding.com couple. I confirmed all contact is done through the wedding.com portal through my response to the inquiry. You have to ask couples for their contact info.

Hi Theo,

I'm looking for a relatively small set up. We've got an outside back yard venue and we're inviting around 120 people. Also, we're looking for someone that has a lot of country and classic rock. Do you guys work on a small scale like that? What kind of set up would we need and how much do you charge for 4 hours?

Thanks,
Caitlin

There you have it. What i did was call the 1-800 number to ask a question. Nobody was available tot take my call. Someone in California did call me back promptly. That was nice. I asked the question about why the brides contact info isn't listed when you pull up that they are looking for a DJ? You can find out about details of their wedding but the contact info isn't given at that time. I was told you have to go through their software and they contact the bride so you can get their info. That seemed strange to me.

Why should you have to go through that when if you show that you're interested in doing their wedding the contact info should be there. You're paying money already, so why not just keep it simple? What I've seen done in the past is you pay to advertise on a site and when you get a lead from the site you click on it and it gives you their info including a email and if they choose to list it a telephone number to contact them.

I'm just curious. Did you book this bride and if you did for how much?

OK let's not resort to fourth grade name calling. Attack the subject not the person...

As you were

If you are in a market where the going rate is $750 or whatever the glass celing is this week and you are only getting inquiries for $100-$400 then I hate to break this to you but you have gone wrong somewhere. You have been here over a year and I don't recall you ever saying you actually did a wedding.

Not like you are going to listen to me but what the hell. Part of your problem is the only exposure you are getting is in the bar. Tell you a story about bar DJs you might be the most popular in town but when it comes time to book a wedding most people won't even consider you no matter how good you are. It's a different world and most people realize that. The ones that will consider you are looking cheap because bar DJs work cheap.

One of the top things people ask me when we are in conversation about an event is they wonder if this is going to be like a club experience. I tell them no unless that is what you are looking for and most of them say it's exactly what they are not looking for.

Start re-reading threads start taking the advice given...Just start. Or you can just keep spinning your wheels it's up to you

Are you still waiting and if so how many days has it been?

Its been about 5 days. Focusing on other areas for now though to turn this lemon into lemonade. Trying my hand at blogging, will send messages to the couples regarding new posts, and see what happens. The blogs reach will not be only for wedding.com. I am just starting their first to gauge response.

Thought I'd chime in on a related bit. I signed up for thumbtack.com and got my first lead in yesterday. They want 20% as a referral fee (even though I'm doing all the selling)! Obviously, I nuked the account.
The lead IS worth the 20%! They have overhead costs, websites etc. I would pay up to 25% for quality leads. My getting 75-80% of $1,500.00 is better than my getting 100% of $0.00. You can always refuse if you are already booked or farm it out to someone.

Canute, as you well know, 15% is pretty standard for a booking agent. That's with them doing all the selling, handling the contract and collection. For a passive web lead where I have to do the selling, contract and collection, 20% is ridiculous. $2-$3, flat-rate is understandable or maybe 3%-5% is what I'd call reasonable but no way can I see any way to reasonably justify that percentage.

Part of it also is the downside of posting prices. If I could pitch $1k and pay out $200, yea you're right, I'd still net better pay. However, it simply won't work for my biz setup and I don't think they're leads are worth changing everything around for the possibility that their leads are any better than gigmasters or eventective. I highly doubt they have anything more than the ultra-cheap web surfers.

I guess that is right and it is the main reason why I do not post Package Prices as every Client has individual needs.

Dont worry Jeff he will only read what he wants to read - as he never listens anyway

I haven't signed up and choose not to because of how they do things. If I'm going to pay for a lead i think i should get their contact info without having to go through them. Why should i?

Update....I signed up with WeddingWire earlier this week. I have booked 2 weddings so far. 1 yesterday and another just now. Both had WedPlan profiles and the one from today has a profile on Wedding.com.

That said I think the exposure Wedding.com provided was worth it as both gigs nearly pays the cost of a years advertising on both sites. I was torn between WeddingWire and The Knot and am liking the WeddingWire experience so far.
