I've done a few store gigs over the years and I know some do several a year but it is a pretty much untapped market. Thoughts?

I think it's definitely an interesting market .. not sure how 'profitable' it is though.

My thoughts are it's weekday work, mostly close to home, and fairly easy to do it would be a windfall for a full timer I would think especially if you could become the go to guy

I've done some in-store events before for Swatch and New York and Company. They typically book very late (kind of like club events do) so I think they are most appropriate to fill in dates that you might not otherwise have filled. And I was done early enough to still book a club gig if I wanted to, so it didn't even take that inventory. I think I played from 11-3 or 12-4... something like that.

It couldn't have been easier work. For someone that is newer to mixing and wants a pretty risk-free place to practice in front of the public... it's great. Even if you trainwreck you don't ruin the dance floor at all. I also got a list of store promo announcements that they wanted me to make every 15-20 minutes. They were full scripted, I didn't have to think at all.

I think the perhaps better spot is in fitness right now. I've got a buddy that is doing pretty consistent work on live-DJ fitness classes which is a nice mid-week segment. I'd be looking to partner with gyms if I were looking for more mid-week work.

The key in both of those markets are DJs that can mix though. If you're just putting a playlist on, they might as well have stuck with their Muzak. Doing something interesting in how you play it is really critical.
