Shouldn't be too much more than buying a keyboard for a regular computer.... I bought a replacement for my former Gateway which is now smashed to smitherines... I think I paid like $20.00 for it on ebay even replaced the screen for under $50

Rob's right the parts aren't that expensive. The big issue is that with most laptops you have to buy the whole keyboard, no big deal since it's cheap but you have to install it from the back which means you get to pull out the whole mobo just to get at couple of seating clips.

Several years ago, when I first went digital, I managed to "take out" the "L" key on my Toshiba laptop's keyboard, when a clipboard I was using fell into my keyboard.

I had the extended warranty, so I took it to a service center locally. As I recall, they turned it around the same day. I went out to lunch, and came back, taking my laptop home with me. It's rare that I have something this positive to say about a service center. If you're in Southern California, I would be happy to recommend them, if you'd prefer to have it done, versus replacing it yourself.

Holy Complicated Strokes Batman...!

All I had to do was take out about 4 screws to get the cover off and then the keyboard just lifted out and there was a thin connector cable to disconnect and that was all there was to removal... then just install in the reverse... I had a Gateway M50... the monitor was equally as easy to change out.

It didn't look that hard on the Toshiba, either. But hey, I already had the extended warranty, so use it! It seems like overkill that all the letters had to be replaced, but that's how they make 'em.

Oh wow according to my Acer's service manual I have to remove the keyboard tray from the back which means I have to pull everything out of the casing to get to it. With a couple keys missing it's no big deal because still works it's just a minor annoyance when typing.

I once left my laptop open on the dining room table and promptly forgot it was there. I come back to find my kids (2 & 3 at the time) had popped off all the keys! After a mild (more like wild) panic attack, I realized I could snap them back in myself. However, the computer was off and requires a password to log in (which means all the keystrokes are hidden). So I had to guess a few times which keys I was pressing before I could log in, open Word and then type to see what each key did.

BTW, yes I can type and yes I know the QWERTY keyboard, however it was all those other keys that screwed me up.

I always say if you aint a Computer Tech thats Qualified to do these things
- then send it to someone that does...

you only have to mess up once and can make said laptop not bootable or something else!

but hey I deal with these things all the time

I've had several laptops and the keys will always go after a few years of typing. And even if they work they get dirty and oily from your fingers. It's a pet peeve of mine. I use a wireless mouse/keyboard with my laptop on a stand at gigs...and I use the same on my desk at the office...just no stand. That way I can wear out a replaceable $60 wireless keyboard/mouse instead of my laptop keyboard. And the built in keyboard is always there if you need it.
