I have seen the price of LED curtains drop dramatically over the last few years. Has anyone ever used one for a gig? They are a poor-mans alternative to an LED wall but still offer significant eye-candy. I recently saw a 6' x 6' unit with 900 LEDs for about $160. It supports custom images and scrolling text. I am certainly intrigued by the novelty of it and might buy one just for kicks. I just have to figure out a temporary mounting solution.

Is this what are you talking about, something like this? This one I saw in A\C. I don’t remember what the capabilities were.

That one looks fixed to a backing curtain. The one I bought is loose strips that hang. I'm sure I could affix it to a curtain with some thread or a glue gun if I wanted to.

The most popular and impressive ones I see everywhere now are digital signage panels. Each panel is free standing and is something like 30 in. wide by 84" in. tall.
They can be used independently or combined to make a larger image area or video wall.

I would not want to own any of this stuff unless I was going to make the entire business about that product, It's far easier to rent them or subcontract when necessary.

As smaller and cheaper variations of the technology emerge it's important that our gigs not start to resemble a front porch decked out with light up Halloween or Christmas decor.

So I got the unit. It is bright! However, it arrived in a completely tangled mess. I am going to try to untangle it tonight. Then we shall see how the images look.

Bob is right, this stuff is not for pro use. I am going to hang it from my pergola to use as eye candy to draw people outdoors during my NYE party. I definitely will NOT leave this up on a permanent basis. However, you can program the text and add photos. That means I will probably drag it out for other occasions.

It took me over 30 minutes to detangle the unit. The unit works pretty well with the IR remote control but you get a lot more features and scenes when you switch to the phone app. I am pretty impressed overall even though a handful of the 300+ animations didn't seem to work.

My biggest gripe is the resolution but I knew this would be an issue when making this purchase. I knew this wasn't going to be an LED wall. I bought the 900 LED version which is an array of 30x30 pixels. This is about the resolution of a program icon but spread across a 5'x5' area. I can't believe they offer these curtains with half that resolution. I definitely wouldn't recommend those. The major downside of the low resolution is that you can't really make out the images up close. Some of the 20x20 pixel versions are larger at 6.5'x6.5'. I can't imagine how much worse those are to view.

I will use this for my NYE party. I will post the guest reactions. I am probably pickier than they are.
