My new fancy shmancy website

I'm going to have to have a new picture taken as well (yuck).

Anyway,

Thanks Wiz for showing us the "WIX" site. I've used it for Myspace. It has potential, but
there are still a lot of slow machines out there in the average home. I stopped having an all flash DJ site because of negative feedback about loading times.

Hank, you don't by any chance know if a Wix website can be moved to another hosting company?

Once I'm ready I either need to switch the wix site over to being a paid website hosted by them and have my other domains be the searchable ones all linked to the wix one or have the wix website moved to another hosting company if that can be done. I'm trying to figure this all out. I guess once I'm ready to go live all I have to do is have my current website hosted by wix using any domain name I want? Then SEO can be done and it's like any other domain hosted by any hosting company?

Just make sure your hosting provider has "domain forwarding". That means you can point your domain to any address you want. Another feature is "domain masking". This feature will always show your domain name at the top of the page and not the actual page name (in your case the wix address).

Neither of these features should have to cost you extra. Network Solutions (for example) charges like $12 for each per year on top of your hosting fee. This is a rip-off IMO.

Hey Wiz - If you can do that site surely you can knock out a decent HTML site?

I mean what you have there is far better than most jocks but from a search engine point of view it's not going to happen.

Maybe a decent blog would have been better for you???

Welcome back all the guys I deleted by mistake - I just noticed I only have Chuck and Dan there - did you all **** me off or was it me?

D

Ok, I think it just sunk in. Once I buy a domain name I contact wix and have them switch my current subdomain that it's under to the new domain I just bought. Right?

Wix hosting is only $9.95 a month and the site seems to load fast and I don't have anything flashy on my website. The only reason I continued building the website with wix is because it was the only sitebuilder easy enough that I could use it. Every other sitebuilder was too complicated, too difficult or just had templates that looked like every other website out there.

...by the way Wiz - I don't want to bring up price or anything but for your area surely you can command a higher fee???

Bollocks comments not welcome.... ;)

I can command a higher fee once I do some weddings and get some experience. After that my price will double. I'm giving it away just to get a few gigs and get myself going. I know those prices are ridiculously low.

Unlike most of the people here at ODJT, I haven't been a DJ for decades, this is all new to me. It was only a little over a year ago that I decided to become a professional singer and then shortly after that a DJ.

I also need some gigs to get some content for the website.

Bottom feeder for 6 months to get my feet wet. After that I charge what I'm worth.

Everyone's gotta start somewhere. Unfortunately I didn't have the luxury of working for someone for a while to cut my teeth and gain some valuable experience. I am however a vocal performer and that gave me an edge at being comfortable in front of an audience and speaking on a microphone.

Ok, I've made a bunch of changes. Since I first created the website I've tried a bunch of different things and made hundreds of changes and little tweaks. I've changed a bunch of things based on the comments and suggestions I've gotten. Thanks for the comments and suggestions . . .

Cool mate - I couldn't help but look at the cost ;) Good idea get your feet wet, make some friends at gigs and get REFERENCES for a file folder :)

Some nice work you've done there, and yeah i second you on your comment that without these website builders and tools, its gonna be an awfully tough job to design a site, if your not a fulltime designer or smthng. Anyway i'd like to say you have a good site coming up there, and also would like to thank you for showing me about wix.com . Is it free btw? i just signed up and am exploring. I just dont wanna go thro the hassle of designing the whole damn thing and finally ending up with a page that asks me for my VISA card no!! lols

Wiz: If you're looking for an easy to use web builder.... look at yahoo + Yahoo Sitebuilder. It's what I cut my teeth with and like you I had absolutely no html skills. It's very easy drag and drop style of design.... you make the graphics and wording and drop them where you want them on the page.... even has some nice nav buttons pre-designed.

It took time but I then easily converted to a more powerful design tool Dreamweaver.... and well you saw my designs evolve over time.

DJ Shaun, thanks for your kind words.

Wix is FREE.

If you want to get rid of their ads where it says Wix on the right side and on the bottom it says "This website created using Wix FREE edition", you convert the website to a paid hosting website for $9.95 per month. Once you do this the wix stuff disappears. To me that seems very reasonable and I don't have a problem with that. I think it's a good deal. At that point I'll just have them use one of my domains.

Rob I looked briefly at Yahoo and nothing so far compares to the ease of use of Wix that I've looked at. If you haven't looked at it yet, you should. It's so frikken easy it's ridiculous. That's what I needed and what I want. For now the website I made is just going to have to be good enough for a few months or even a year until I have some cash rolling in. At that point I can pay someone like a graphic artist to make something really cool looking that I could never come up with.

I'm downloading and installing it right now.
I'll play with it and see f I can break it, arf, arf, LOL, :sqlaugh:

No seriously, if it's simple like wix that would be good, maybe better because I could do everything with Yahoo, register the domains, create the site and host with them. I'll check it out and report back, thanks for the tip.
