So I bought the Nikon D90, it came with 2 lens, day time photos are awesome with plenty of light, lets not talk about it. But when it comes to distance photos, and not even too far at night I get a lot of Red Eye almost grainy photos.

What would be the best lens for this type of situation, I'm not using a flash, should I be looking for one and which one?

Thanks.

Without a flash I am curious how you are getting red eye? The grain is probably due to the camera auto selecting ISO to gather as much light as possible.

Couple of questions:

Are you shooting in an auto mode or manual mode?
How wide of a lens do you need (number of people).

This is not really a Nikon issue, just basic photography.

What you are looking for is a 'fast' lens. Lenses with smaller f stop numbers (which actually mean greater opening). The problem with these lenses is that they have a very narrow depth of field, making it harder to take in focus pictures.

You should consider a good flash. Bounce it off the ceiling for a more natural look and less annoying.

As for a specific lens recommendation?

The Nikon 12-24/2 is a nice lens at $1000
The Sigma 18-50 EX DG 2.8 is a good lens at under $400.

Sir shoot the pics in raw mode and then make exposure and light adjustments on the computer program!

You may be getting red eye from the laser or IR focusing light!
