Hey guys, im new to the forum, but am glad i have found the forum. Great information and huge help. I am just starting to dj in a small town in Oklahoma. Im honestly the only dj around this neck of the woods. I know there are djs in the surrounding bigger towns, but they are 100 miles away. I have done several small gigs 7-8 grade dances of maybe 25 students. Have done a prom for a high school, maybe 50 students. I have researched and found great leads on music selection to start building playlist. I know every school and event is different, but how do you guys plan the night out? What i mean is what are you playing for the first hour then 2nd hour and then final hour? Do you come in soft with a few great dance songs the first hour then keep that up into the 2nd hour with more then final hour pull the great stuff out? Am i over thinking this? I know there are enough hits out there to keep the hits going all 3 hours. 60 great feel good songs, the line dances are always a hit, slow songs always do well. Guess im just looking for a general feel of how to approach. I do understand that i need to read the crowd and floor. I get that. With so many songs the students want vs what staff finds appropriate is a battle. Gosh how do you keep both sides happy. im finding its about impossible, and i forsure lean towards keeping staff happy because they pay the bill. And requests, gosh the kids dont stop, and again no way can i play the garbage they bring, i would get shut down. Lol. So in a nut shell, playlist structure 1st hour 2nd hour final hour? how to handle requests? how much microphone do you do? Any cool things to do? Ive done the mannequin challenge and that has been a hit with them. I do give the school an event playlist to fill out, but i can only use about half that maybe because of the garbage they put on it. Guess this is how the market is with schools? Thanks guys for your help, just getting my feet wet and looking for some great input.
