What is your feelings on 50 years of Hip Hop?

My feelings is in the beginning it was fun music that wasn't crazy, nasty or with cursing all through out a song. It was enjoyable and there was some really good music in the beginning. Now a lot of this stuff is just plain trash. Some is still good music that someone can listen to. It's not all bad. Freedom of speech is what made it became out of control.
 
'I can't say because different events require different styles of music. Some songs will stay hot for a while and die down. Others will remain classics forever. It depends on the style of music.'

'It depends on the area that you do events in and what types of music they want to hear. There are some areas that they listen to Country music. Others it's Hip Hop, Rock & Roll and so on.'

What's funny is that I started DJing in 1980 (43 years)...and I carried vinyl records around for 25 years...

Probably before most of today's mobile DJ's were even born!

And I never once relied on Hip Hop music to keep me in business!

When I first started out in 91 I too bought records to play music. There are those who can't believe how we used to have to do things back then. It's super easy for someone to become a DJ. Now how good they are or will be is another thing. There was no downloading songs from online. No DJs using a computer to DJ with or play a song from the internet.

Although the sound of hip hop has changed over the decades, it's still the same basic formula. Which means it all starts to sound pretty much the same. (and I don't mean that in a bad way.) Unlike say rock music. Over the padt 50 (or more) years, it has branched off into classic rock, new rock, alternative rock, punk, pop-punk, grunge, southern rock et cetera.

It took a while for it to grow on me (about two decades). These days two local bands call me up to sing Rapper's Delight whenever they play at my local watering hole. I always pack the dance floor. I get a kick out of surprising people with it at karaoke bars too since I don't look the part. It has earned me several free drinks over the years. :)

I rarely listen to rap for pleasure. Most of the newer stuff has little appeal to me. I know it is big with younger crowds and that is part of the reason I have pretty much hung up the headphones. I ended my music subscriptions about 8 or 9 years ago. Every month it was rap and auto-tuned pop. I no longer felt engaged with the music and felt no desire to remain current.

what you say is true everyone has their favor genre, but you must agree music has change and not to the good

I feel that today's "Hip Hop" is not that Hip. Actually, to me it's not Hip at all, and the Hop part is pretty weak. Gen Z isn't made out for Hip Hop. Just Sayin'

I definitely agree to a point .. alot of music from our time (and those before us) sucked also - we generally only remember (and operate on) the hits.

we agree to disagree. I quite schools the beginning of 2020 but since 2020 my opinion music sucks. Yes, you are right the new generation thinks and believes this music is great. Hip Hop is next to none that is danceable, and country is slow bpm and beat. Your right there is some good songs but very few. Doing car shows i don't worry about getting and playing new stuff

Hip-Hop was not the original name. It started out as "I Don't Wanna Go to School" but a record executive decided that didn't really have a good ring to it. After a period of brain-storming it was finally settled with "Hip-Hop" which was a much needed refinement of "Hopeless Hippies."

Originally it was called rap music. In the beginning it was fun good clean music. Because of freedom of speech it turned into a nightmare. A lot of the music is with cursing through out a song and just about sex. At one time to truly make it you had to have real talent. To name a few, there's Aretha Franklin, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye and many more. Today it's about what sells and makes someone a ton of money. One of my favorites who I seen at a show is Brian McKnight. Let me mention my 2 favorite groups of all times and that's Earth Wind And Fire, second is The Isley Brothers.
