I'm looking to hopefully get an SLR before my birthday which is June 2nd. I've narrowed it down to the Canon T2i or the T3i. I don't know a thing about an SLR camera but was told both of these are very good. If you had a choice which one would buy and why? Why wouldn't you buy the other one? What's the big difference between the 2 if there is any? All I know I want one within the price range of these 2 and that are very good for video and low light.

Main differences is the T3i has an articulated (swivel) screen and allows digital zooming when taking video .. other than some other minor things, they are very similar. The swivel screen helps when shooting video or even crowd shots, as you can raise the camera high and see the image in the screen if you tilt it down. The difference in cost should be less than $100.

Here's a video comparison:

Neither I am a Pentax fan since high school. The advantage with Pentax is almost all of their lens for their film cameras will work with great results in their DSLR's. I just picked up a great lens that is about 20 years old at Goodwill slip it on my Pentax Kx DSLR and it worked like a charm.

Since both are basically the same what light would you use to hook up to the camera?

I have the Canon Speedlite 430EX ii, and it's been great .. cycles very fast. I am not as familiar with the other brands. The light built in is probably fine for basic work, but doesn't have the power to light up a large area.

I use a T3i for my own shooting, and a T2i in my photobooth. Both are fine cameras.

Whichever one you buy, take the time to read the manual and understand how it works and what all of the different settings do. If you only use it in "Auto" mode, you're no better off with a DSLR than you would be with a simple point-and-shoot.
