I looked at that one too Rob -- the thing I don't like, is it uses a rechargeable battery, and not standard AAs...

Doug I got nothing to offer on this thread I got a 7 year old ~$130 Fuji but given your predisposition to no cell phones and tin foil hats I'd think you would be looking for something like this:

Thanks for everyones input, it's much appreciated. I have settled on the Canon Power Shot A590 IS. I ordered it and a 24 gig memory chip from Tiger Direct which I should have on Thursday or Friday. The whole deal with shipping was just under $137.

Good choice. We just bought the Power Shot SD990-IS as our pocket point and shoot camera. 14.7 megapixels and shoots movies in mp4 format @ 640x480. Also grabbed a 16gb 180x card for it. My wife loves it (because it's candy apple red).
