Hey All,

New territory for me here. I got a new PC a while back and the HD crashed (Seagate 750Gb). It was covered under warranty and they shipped a new one out next day air. I just replaced the drive and sent them back the old one after reformatting.

Since this was the first time for the case to be opened, I thought I would add another DVD burner and HD. There in lies the problem. This new PC motherboard has 6 SATA inputs but my DVD and HD are IDE.

Will this work?

The only thing resembling an IDE connection is the floppy on this board, unless I'm blind?

Isn't the floppy IDE?

Wouldn't the only requirement be multiple connectors on the tape?

SATA drives now are much faster then IDE interfaced drives, and there is also more speed increases with SATA promised for the future. For $30-$60 at any store, even Wal-Mart you can pickup a SATA DVD writer, and for $50 on newegg you can pickup a good SATA HD. I was running an IDE drive forever, and when the drive died I decided to utilize the 2 SATA ports on my mobo. One plus I've found is that the elimination of the big IDE cables has freed up space in my case, and allows for better airflow around the Hard drive bay.

This gets my vote in your case... return the HD and DVD Writer for Sata

Thanks Brian and Rob,

The DVD drive is a 6 month old Plextor PX800A (karaoke friendly) and the HD is about 1 y/o, both from my last PC. I just figured since I had the case open, I would add a second dvd drive and additional HD space. I did't realize this new PC had SATA, hence the query.

I deleted my post. I though he was trying to recover from a drive, not adding another.

Hiredpower : If you're using a sound card of your own and not the mother-board unit, they generally have an IDE/CD interface socket built-in.

Rick: 8" . I know this to be true. I got drunk, naked, and fell forward. My chest never touched snow.

that should work good actually

I always keep one older system just for the older hardware (P4)

the one I normally buy is these ones located here >> IDE 2 SATA <<

let me know what you think!

I have used about 5x of them so far (maybe cos they are so cheap as well

Thanks Dennis. I just want to have a backup HDD in this new PC and utiize a second DVD drive.

I noticed that the converter I found doesn't support optical drives. I'll give your link a try.

it does all of mine
I have used it for Optical drives...
