I am shocked no one replied in this as it shows numbers which disprove many of the esteemed colleagues which claim a much higher curve. Im not attempting to drive numbers down but the charts here show other than mentioned regularly within the industry.

You get that second L1 and you will be top Conquistador on the block. Price accordingly lol.

100% are above average

Like the children of Lake Woebegon* the denizens of these pages must truly all be above average.

*National Public Radio has a very long running show called Prairie Home Companion. Each show they sign off from their fictional home town by saying "Where all the women are strong, the men are good looking and all the children are above average."

Jon,

This ain't new "news"

I have been saying Bullchit to the "worth" DJ's for years! Yes once in a blue moon a DJ with the typical DJ system may work for $2000 (I have done so myself but it was a 12 hour biker wedding) but those blue moons are few and far between! The rest of those $2000+ gigs have been earned by the amount of equipment that went into the setup!

I agree Steve and its why I posted actual stats which I hadnt seen to show the difference from that 2001 stat sheet you see on most of their website and in their seminars. These are up to date even for 2008.

Or to the ones who still hang onto the $2000 price tag many have seen drastic declines in the number of shows.....guess if your not in the public eye each week it doesnt matter how good you are....

part 2 here comes the graph

Avg DJ cost $650ish
AVG Wedding Cost $20kish

That means the DJ is about 3% of the budget.
With Ceremony AVG price INC that's a whopping 6%

Yet 80% of the success is due to the entertainment...

Something isn't adding up...

In some markets, perhaps. ;)

In our chosen market (which, to be honest is not a large market), our service is a larger piece of the wedding expense pie. In some cases, we comprise the majority of the wedding budget.

Take the following example: This cake cost the B&G over $600.00. There was a string of lights run through the bridges and around the base... a beautiful cake. Their venue with catering and bar ran them over $100.00 per guest. Upscale even for Delaware. Our take for the night was considerably more than 6%, lol.

This bride recently booked us to DJ her Dad's wedding. She doesn't ask "how much?", she asks "are you available?"

I ain't no worther or nothin'... just saying. Charge like a pro, conduct business like a pro and people will treat you like a pro. :)

The wedding I did today, tonight, this morning LOL, I don't have any idea what they had in it, But I would say the tent ran them $2000, the Generator ran them $150 for the day The AV setup of 3 42 inch flat screens and sound for the Belmont race (all 15 minutes of it) ran them another $1000. The food (which was fantastic BTW) I saw that check it was for $2100 that was after the deposit which I didn't see! The bar I can only guess at the B&G paid for it all mostly high end wines and a pretty good selection of Booze (also mostly high end stuff)! I fugure somewhere in the $3,000 dollar range. And the DJ used a lousy little Peavey system his take was $250 deposit before the event, $750 at the completion and recieved a $200 tip!

Total time from leaving home 12:30PM and arriving back at home 1:30AM = 13 hours. Had one meeting with the Groom in prep less than 1 hour including travel time and maybe $20 in extra music and another hour getting that together. So I put the total cost of the reception at a maximum of $10,000. So including tip my precentage of the wedding budget was 12%. Or $80 an hour for that gig!

Last weeks wedding was a 5 hour event that paid $750, my percentage of that event was over 15%.

TJ where are you coming up with this 3% figure?

I was basing the % on the pictures. Posted in this thread that were giving stats.

I think the avg wedding here is around 12-16K so I am about 10%. I do offer cheaper packages.

Avg event is 5PM - 1am not inc ceremony. 1 hour cocktail, 3 dinner/formal, 4 hour dance.

I did laugh at PMs book when he suggested a party going "all night long" might end around 11 or midnight. I suggest brides might want to wrap it up at around 12 to save some money on booze/cleaning as the last hour is typically more spilling than drinking.

Don't most venues charge either a flat rate to clean of have it added in to the price?

I do alot of rentals of venues here and never have been charged extra for cleaning.

Depends on the Venue, There are cleaning services which will come out to a hall and clean for you for a price, some people will opt for this rather than clean them selves.

In Hotels they will charge extra for excessive use, pretty much no damage deposit is returned.

My province, if you believe stats, leads just about the world in consumption per ca pita. My city alone has more hotel rooms and lisenced drinking establishments than Vegas/cap. We have one corner with each having a liquor store on it and a night club, 1 sports bars, 1 pub, and 3 lounges with in the same block in either direction.
