Question! If you have a router that connects two PCs by hard wire and a laptop by wireless, they are NOT networked. Can Malware, Virus, Trojans etc migrate from one machine to another on its own?

You've been reading too much into this Swine Flu situation Houston :D:D:D:D:D

I'll let the experts answer this one ;)

Basicly NO....

but its networked if you have them connected to the router....
you would have to have two seperate accounts for the internet on two seperate routers that are nowhere near each other to say they are NOT Networked

I can see all mine because the way you think they are not networked is the file sharing permissions...

best to read up more on networking the ins and outs

plus to see what or how on spyware trojans etc go to -- spywarewarrior.com
they can give you hints on how to protect yourself...

The reason why I asked is because i have another older PC thats connected to my router. It has Windows98 on it. I want to be able to have guests at my home use this PC instead of my business Pc or DJ laptop. If they happen to visit a questionable site and that PC gets infected, I do not care. I just don't want the problem migrating over to my other two machines.
Do you think if I turn off or disconnect the other two while the old machine is being used will help, also disconnect the old one when the other two are in use?

If you router is set properly the answer is no.

The answer is yes, actually.

I could quickly write a program that would establish communications with any computer that is attached to yer router or wireless. There are many back doors...

Your best bet is to make sure all the machines have decent, proactive anti-virus software running. You could also do what you mentioned, and disconnect the others while that guest PC is running. If you do that, make sure you don't transfer media between that computer and the others, via flash drives, externals, etc.

Rick,
I am also in the Art Business and sometimes marketers and clients send me stuff that I have to download to be viewed or to click on a link. If I use the old PC to do that and I want to transfer a downloaded file to my new PC via a flash drive, would running a Virus Scan on the newly downloaded file first (Before transferring it) solve the problem? Like I stated earlier, I'd much rather the older PC get the infection not the newer one.

Yeah, as long as your anti-virus is up-to-date, it should handle it...

I'd still use anti-virus on yer new machine as well though. I use ESET Smart Security on all mine, and it uses very little resources, and has never interfered with any software I run :)

So you want the portable version of that Rick ?

but you dont install just runs on a thumb drive and gets all the updates
