this song will likely
never be out of date here - as this is the "Northern Michigan" that those of us who
live and play here love

I didn't know your location, hence I could not know that your area is specifically referenced in the song.

Ive said it before and i will say it again we as DJ know or should know what and what not to play but heres were it get a little sticky , there are no middle school radio stations out there if you know what i mean, theres just your local top 40 station and they are regulated by the FCC, so that being said if its played on the radio that your 10 year old is listing to then why cant i play it, and i do play clean radio edit only

All Summer Long

It has been my decision not to play Kid Rock-All Summer Long at middle or high school dances. "Smoking funny things...drinking whiskey out the bottle...making love, etc." don't play well in towns/communities where we are.

Yes, children may have the CD and hear it all over local radio, but I have to be accountable at the event. Now, if it's an adult dance - I'll play Kid Rock, Luke Skywalker, Wu Tang, and anything else that the (paying) customer wants!

Didn't notice where you are -- not in yer profile. Not that it matters, IMHO.

Just curious -- did you ever smoke funny things, drink out the bottle, make love, when you were a teen...?

Got asked to play Werewolves of London mixed into it at a elementary school dance last Thursday. Parents and kids dancing to their hearts content. I rarely play it anymore since it is over a year old. I played it at school gigs when it first came out now not so much.

Rick

Nope, never did any of those things:sqwink:

As always, I'm not making any political/moral/ethical/religious statement with my post about our music selection. It's purely a business decision based on the customers that we serve.

"Your mileage may vary. Offer void where prohibited. Member FDIC...."

I don't like the double standard either, but I don't want to do anything that is going to cause "heat" for the school administration either. Remeber it's a school dance and a school is a learning enviroment.

So if I play a song that has questionable content and some clueless parent complains... that gets the admin in trouble and possibly jeopardizes my future bookings.

I won't play questionable songs. I don't care about some dumb kid's opinion. If they ask for a popular song like hotel room, I tell them they can hear it on the radio every hour.

All my school support my music decisions 100%.

The 'I Play radio edits" excuse is no longer valid since radio lets way too much go.

haha if the kids quit coming cause you refuse to play the songs most popular on the radio you will likely be nixed in place of other than dance type activities leaving you at home on a Friday night versus playing radio hits at that school.

I realize that there is i fine line between what and what not to play , but you keep playin the hookey pookey every dance the kids wont want you back they want to dance to what they hear on the radio ( just my 2 cents )

Let me respond to this in two parts.

Omitting a few current songs because of content or language does not kill the crowd off. If you program the music properly, you can get thru 3 hours of great music pulling from cuurent hits as well as the last 2-3 years. I even play a few that are 10 years old life eifel 65, ATC, daft punk etc.

Secondly, if your set-up is cool looking to the kids (lots of lights, speakers, effects etc.) and you engage them on the mic and with participation, They will stay regardless.

AND... Kids don't make the hiring decisions, the SGA or ASB advisor and the Principal do. I've never had a teacher or Principal not back me up when I chose not to play a questionable song.

I know nothing about Canadian schools, but I can't imagine it being that much different than here music wise.

Do the schools tell you not to play suggestive songs? or are you ok with radio versions?

become the governing body then I will add my opinion further. However I played All Summer Long at a elementary school Halloween evening with their parents. It is required that a parent attend with them in order to get inside. They even had a Michael Jackson Tribute dancer perform. Hmm with all the allegations of MJ's past 10 yrs I am wondering why some of you would play any of his music, Poker Face and Gaga, and much of the new stuff from the past 15 yrs. I did use Daft Punk at the middle school as it was requested.

Secondly, if your set-up is cool looking to the kids (lots of lights, speakers, effects etc.) and you engage them on the mic and with participation, They will stay regardless. 2. I agree with engaging them with microphone and energy. Sexy Chick, Fire burning, Evacuate The Dancefloor. Tik Tok , I Gotta Feelin, Party In The USA, The Stereos etc.excites these same kids way more than any light show or effects. However they tend to enjoy eating or smoking the Fog Juice or breaking the glow sticks up and flinging the liquid around cause the music sucks.:sqerr:

AND... Kids don't make the hiring decisions, the SGA or ASB advisor and the Principal do. I've never had a teacher or Principal not back me up when I chose not to play a questionable song.
3. Unfortunately the kids that go to these events dont drive otherwisw they might leave cause the music sucks. They do however remember rather well and will recall how the music was not to their liking and eventually none of them will show up. At this juncture no matter how much the staff like you if there are no kids present the dances will cease.:sqerr:

I know nothing about Canadian schools, but I can't imagine it being that much different than here music wise.

Do the schools tell you not to play suggestive songs? or are you ok with radio versions?

5.They trust my Canadian Music Subscriptions which have radio edits. I play any edit that may play on the radio for the most part atleast if the bleeps dont turn it into a instrumental version.:sqwink::sqlaugh::sqrolleyes::rofl:

I have never had issue with my methods at elementary, middle school, High School etc on either side of the border.

That's good to hear. Do your schools have major issues with the freak dancing?

Here's what a local school had to do to make the students behave. They have a contract. Note Line 2under dance rules.

That's mostly what started all the content restrictions here. Principals think the content promotes the dancing style, when it's behavioral. And usually the schools do a poor job of chaperoning the dances.

don't blame the radio blame the FCC they OKed it

You seem to be implying that all songs have to be submitted and approved by a government entity, before being allowed to be played on the radio.

Are you really this clueless? Radio can play (and/or say) ANYTHING until or unless someone (or enough people) COMPLAIN about it. Then, it often takes YEARS for the FCC to address and possibly penalize whatever station crossed the line. The line is an estimate, based on prior findings of fault by the FCC, as interpreted by the legal advisors of any given radio station.

At the middle school dance I DJ'ed for last week, which I vlogged in a dovetail from Chris' Halloween week postings and vlogs, I made an "executive decision" that two requests being made were too "iffy" at a middle school for my comfort level.

"Lovegame" - Lady Gaga
"Right Round" - Flo Rida

My daughter is in 6th grade, and she knew what made me uncomfortable about playing "Lovegame" at a middle school ("I wanna take a ride on your disco stick"). I don't think I'm protecting her or anyone else from being corrupted by these lyrics, by choosing not to play this song that is clean enough to play on the radio. I think I'm protecting myself from getting criticized by parents who might THINK I'm corrupting their children with lyrics like that.

"All Summer Long" doesn't come up as a request anymore at schools, for me.

Don't waste your time debating this issue here...especially with certain folk....Trust me...been there done that....When they have no valid arguments they'll start mocking you (they call it their unique sense of humour)

You're going to find that those who maintain the position" if its played on radio, it's good enough for me" mentality likely don't have kids, or just don't care...

I laugh as these same dj's talk about not playing certain songs at weddings because they feel they are objectionable.....

Canadian schools are no different...It is a very tough line to walk

I'M clueless, well maybe in the fine liberal state of California you can say and do anything but not around here, I have checked with the local radio stations and there are rules they have to follow that are set by the FCC and there are things that can and can not be said on the radio
im not here to get in a pissin match with you but i must be doing something right I'm working most every weekend
