Tip #1: Don't start off with beatmatching. Learn your music, get some gear, book some parties, and work your way up from there. :)

See if there is a successful DJ in your area (Where are you from?) who is willing to mentor you.

I need some hints on how to start off, i live in a small town in sweden...not many ppl here...

Not knowing what you already know or don't know or even what equipment you are or are planning to use makes it very hard to give advice...

Let's start with an easy question:

What is your musical background... and why you want to be a DJ?

Well, i love music and live with it every day. I played guitar a while and then some of my friends wanted music on their house party's and i sat down and checked out dj divsa and dj Syndicate on youtube. And my friends liked the music and after a while i started to make a intrest at the whole dj part. I downloaded VirtualDJ and love making megamixe's, but unfortually it doesnt sound that good and i dont got the skills to make it good yet so thats why i hope you can help me. Right now i just want to get going and start to learn about all of this and my goal is to come out and play on clubs etc. Its a long road but im really in to it!

Cheers from DJ Sande!

In that case what has already been said, learn your music inside and out, learn how to beat count and match would be the first order of business... basically there are no real tricks to doing that... you just have to do it to learn how.....

Sounds like house music is your style... so find two tracks with the exact same BPM and just crossfade back and forth from each and just listen to how it sounds and how it mixes while trying to keep the kick drum or beat sync'd between the two songs.....

Then practice practice practice..... you didn't learn to play the guitar over night and you weren't playing any Steve Vai or Satch the first go around... learning to mix and remix as a DJ is no different... you have to start with the basics before you can freestlye and club mix like the pros....

Well, can u please tell me i little about the beat counts, i mean, what a phase is and such things, the basics? I ind that the hardest atm because i know that its basics to know all about that b4 u can go out and beatmix and such things. I have already made like 3 mixes. But its only 2 of them witch im alittle proud over. Well, i know im not a good dj or i cant really call me a dj but after a week or so with dj'ing as a really intrest its quite good. But i messed around alittle and those things sound crap, bcuz i dont really know things about "beatGrid" or whats i called. maybe someone can tell me something about it?

Thanks all for ur support!

DJ Sande,or just Sande :sqwink:

Well, ive been checking ellaskins alot lately, but cant find his first video... :sqconfused:

But the thing is that he teaches mostly with real dj equipment such as turntables and pitchers, witch i dont have...

BUMP!

Can someone tell me shortly about beatmatch, beatcount and beatGrid?

First what is BPM....

BPM stands for Beats Per Minute...

Beat Count - this is a way to determing BPM think of it like counting the beat of a song for 15 seconds and then multipling that number by 4 this would equal the BPM or tempo of a song.

Beat Matching - is taking to seemingly dissimilar songs with differing BPM's and matching them up during the transition from one song to the next and for the purposes of looping. Typically it is best to choose songs that are withing +- 5 BPM of each other....

It is possible to Beat Match wider differences but it becomes very difficult for even the most experienced mixologist (ie the DJ)

As for Beat Grids.... I honestly don't know about those... I've heard of the term but will have to differ the explaination.

So...if i can beatcount, what is the next step of mixing for me? i want to be able to do a mix like dj divsa or dj syndicate, it exaktly like them but the same structure... any kind of hint on how to start`??

Practice... practice.... practice... and then practice some more...

But what and how should i practice the best...i mean, i do not have any turntables etc...:sqconfused:

Few questions on what you already know about your software.

You have VDJ.
Do you know how to set your CUE points? ( the spot in the song where you want the song to start when you press play)

Do you know how to adjust the tempo or speed of the song using VDJ?

Most music for dancing has some kind of drum track, wether electronic or actual. Can you tell the difference between the Bass kick, the snare, the crash etc.

@eezee

Yes, i know all the basics and those most used instruments in VDJ, its the whole mixing, beatmixing, effekts, eqs, and short commands, etc. i cant figure out...

Its hard for me bcuz i only use the mouse as equipment. That makes it hard to mess with the eq's on both turntables at the same time, some kind of support u pro guys can share with me? I would be truly gratefull if u could teach me and tell me how to go forward bcuz i dont have any irl mentor in my small town or nearby cities.

I now have a music school project where i have to make a mix and tell what im thinking and so on. And for that i need som quick hints...

Thank you all / hophfully "DJ" Sande in near future xD
