I have three backup's of my music on three separate external hard drives. Yes I'm kinda anal retentive.

It's a PIA to keep them all up-to-date when I make any additions or changes to my main home machine.

I've heard of programs designed to make this process a whole lot easier.

Please give me hints and how to's on this issue.

Thanks in advance....

There are syncing programs. (in fact a thread was here just last week).

However, keep in mind that automated syncing is only as good as your tagging. You may still end up with duplication. So, it is best to sync all from a master drive.

I use one master drive that I rip to and convert to mp3 and mp3+g on that I sycronize with my gig drive and backup drives...... I use File Synchronizer from Latshaw Systems... it's a free program and works well.... If I change or delete something from my master drive it will update my gig drive to match.....

There are other programs like Sync Toy that I believe Rick swears by....

I use GoodSync and have been pleased with it. Very flexible setup, you can save your programming for each drive.

Best,

Paul

Sync Toy works flawlessly -- love it, use it daily :)

Well, it's made by MS -- the same people that make yer OS -- go figure ;)

Use a master drive as mentioned for the left, and use Echo to the right. All changes on the left, propagate to the right.

I've used SyncToy and it's ok. Not the fastest solution in the world for a large library - but it works.

I use Allway Sync regularly with excellent results. Allows to you do it automatically when you plug up a drive, and to limit the syncing (syncing a directory to a drive, etc).

On the Mac look into rsync. I've talked with a couple people who have had decent results.

There are other ways to handle syncing and keeping them all up to date... but those are a couple of the ways I've used with good results.

I've found SyncToy to be extremely fast (I use the 64 bit version). I use it mainly for my dev stuff, and it handles 200-300 thousand files in a couple minutes across my network (maybe 600-1000 files changed/added daily) :)

It leaves a small file on each of the drives/folders it syncs, which tells it the last changes -- so as long as you don't change the right side, it's very quick. If you change the right side, it has to rebuild all that info... ;)

I knew I could get some answers here!

Thanks for the options. I'm off on an investigation...

I use file Synchronizer also. Has worked perfectly so far for me.

My previous experience was with the 32-bit version found in XP Power Toys. In my experience Allway Sync was about 20-30% faster - particularly on the initial sync.

Since I haven't used the 64-bit version, and am actually preparing to move away from Microsoft completely (over the next year or so)... I'll just have to take your word for it. ;) :)

Holy sh_t -- I'm gonna have to call Redmond -- yer leaving us...

That could blow our entire bottom line! :sqerr: :sqeek:

I want Agent 99 on this right now :sqlaugh:

Want me to scare you?

I used to be a Microsoft Certified Trainer and first earned my MCSE on Windows NT 3.51!

But I've been using Microsoft products for a very long time and I'm tired of all the headaches and other crap I've dealt with. While my Mac isn't perfect, I've had better results with it than the Microsoft stuff - particularly of late.

I still do lots of Microsoft stuff - including system/network administration and will likely being doing a pilot project next year to virtualize our desktops, but I'm using a Mac on my desk currently and am working to make that shift for everything else I have....

And unlike most other people, I have no intentions of trying to 'persuade' others to make the switch. People should use that works for them... I've recommended lots of products, operating systems and the like over the years - always based on customer NEED, not based on what I happened to be using or selling...

I guess I'm just looking at it like this....

If at first you don't succeed, try try again. Then quit. No use being a damn fool about it!

I guess scare wasn't the real verb I was looking for...

And it wasn't meant to be bragging... or acronym sharing, etc... I never really got into that... It's just posturing and except for my resume, I gave up on acronyms long ago. It was easier to use acronyms for insight into my background and I figured you knew what they meant...

It was just to point out that even though I've long been a supporter of Microsoft and their products I've finally opted to move on to something else because it works better... for me. ;)

I don't care what anyone else uses... :) Besides, if I REALLY want to run a Microsoft product, that's what parallels is for. ;)

lol I have a few portable sync programs I have and clients use...

Portable Best Sync
Portable Good Sync Pro
Portable Allway Sync 'n' Go
Portable Super Flexible Synchronizer
Portable Extreme Sync Remote Service

just a few...
