They're probably going to charge the client for something or they'll just hide it in the venue's cost.

Steve,
When they need money for their chit, they simply add more taxes.

My understanding is it will be collected by the venue and hidden in the cost

lol and you havent started - we already have things like that here :(

This is so funny! My favorite part is: "If there is dancing - the fees double."

Any society that would allow it's government to provide for commercial intervention in the privacy of their weddings deserves to be ripped off. Sorry to say my Canadian friends - but, as long as you have the right to vote and do nothing to prevent said actions - you get the government you deserve.

Guess it goes to show it's not as private as you think Bobby. Ouch old wounds are opening :)

Not at all. Canada is very different - all their music licensing is done through central agencies. That's not possible in the USA and probably never will be.

It would require not just one but TWO Acts of Congress each of which requires a 2/3 majority in both houses of the legislature. Each time the issue has been addressed in the last 100 years the original Congressional intent of both Title 17 and Title 15 USC prevail. So, don't hold your breath - weddings and similar events in the USA are private and will stay that way for the remainder of our lifetime.

Central Agencies...are you sure?

AVLA administers licensing in Canada for the reproduction of sound recordings and reproduction and broadcast of music videos on behalf of copyright owners (usually, record companies). AVLA's licences ensure that owners receive compensation for use of their sound recordings and music videos.

SOCAN (the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada) is the Canadian copyright collective that administers the performing rights of more than 100,000 composer, author and music publisher members by licensing the use of their music in Canada. We collect licence fees on their behalf and distribute royalties to them.

Yes. Central because the AVLA has the sole authority to sell this type of license representing each of the several types of copyrights involved in any given work. This makes it a Canadian monopoly with regard to recording & reproduction rights, and the market prices for those licenses. Not a huge issue for Canadians since the larger percentage of movie and music products are imported rather than produced domestically.

That situation is not allowed in the U.S. and so we must negotiate with individual copyright holders or their representatives to license each unique type of copyright involved in a given work, for a fair market fee not subject to such controls.

oh by the way

It Looks like its okay to copy someones data, if you're the FBI since its not classed as "physical material". Oh the irony of it all....
