I'll answer the question best I can since it keeps getting asked. I originally was never going to become a computer DJ. I was happy using CD's. I'm glad I made the switch. Some of my music I got from a friend. He had me help him with a gig transporting his gear and instead of him giving me money I asked him to give me some music on my HD for payment. I've gotten music from I tunes and other such sights. My partner got some music from a site and I payed him for some of that music. He paid for it himself and he let me get some of it. So that's how I've gotten music over the years.

I was thinking of joining a music subscription service but haven't yet. I just like being able to get different styles of music from different places. I was told such sights will limit you and they don't give you everything.

Now with that said I need to talk about me for a moment. Many years ago I was supposed to get a job in a bar in Elizabeth, NJ. I never got to meet the owner or where the bar was at. What happened was a friend I used to work with was in this bar where a DJ was playing. Nobody was dancing. She finally gave the DJ one of my CD's I gave her for him to play and the crowd went nuts. The DJ even wanted that CD.

The owner decided if I could make him 1k on Saturday night he would pay me $250.00 which is really great money for a DJ in a bar around here. I never got the gig. God was looking out for me. She told me she was in there another night when some guys came in the bar to rob the bar. She said they shot the bartender. Then of course robbed the people in the bar and then went to take the DJ's equipment. This fool was fighting with them to keep them from taking the equipment. It's really not that serious. I can get some more equipment. I can't do that if I'm dead. I would have just let them have it. Of course it would have hurt my heart but as long I was left alive that's what's most important. Believe me that is a true story.

You asked and I told you. That is your opinion of pirated music. Have a nice day like Dennis the Menace likes to say.

If you have music on your hard drive that...

A) you DO NOT have a CD, or record, or cassette, or 8 track, or reel-to-reel to back it up, or

B)DO NOT have a record of payment or receipt for payment for the file.

YOU ARE A PIRATE!!

YOU ARE A THIEF!!!

YOU ARE A..... (I can not say what I want to say because it is a violation of the TOS)

I hope, with my help, you get your pirate, thief a$$ busted and spend some time in jail after haveing to sell everything you own to pay the fine that should be imposed upon you.

Low life's like you make sick to my stomach. You are such a drain on this country.

Maybe you could take your loaded hard drive to the local flee markets and make some extra money by selling burned CDs.

F'me!!

You asked and I told you.

Agreed and thank you for answering and being honest. That is to be respected.

That is your opinion of pirated music

There is no "opinion" of pirated music. There is music you're in possession of legally and music you're in possession of illegally. That's it, period, end of story. Knowingly having and using music that you did not legally acquire is not to be respected - especially amongst other professionals.

This is probably part of the reason you can price your shows at such a low number - you have minimal to no costs.

If I may suggest, because you have admitted that you are trying to learn how to do it right, please remove all illegally obtained media from your devices.

I'll answer the question best I can since it keeps getting asked.

You should answer them as they're asked and not after "it keeps getting asked"

I originally was never going to become a computer DJ. I was happy using CD's. I'm glad I made the switch.

Most of us are happy to be using digital media.

Some of my music I got from a friend. He had me help him with a gig transporting his gear and instead of him giving me money I asked him to give me some music on my HD for payment.

Let's look at this from another angle. When I was very young (and learning to play), I got music instead of money too .. but in the form of legally obtained music that was mine. It was not a copy of stuff someone already had. I could have gotten the money and accomplished the same thing myself. This is where you went wrong. If you have a copy of someone else's stuff - it is NOT your music. Legally, it belongs to whoever purchased that copy of the media - unless that person turns over the physical media to you and does not retain any for themselves.

This would be akin to saying someone installed Windows 8 on your machine because you helped them .. you do not have a legal copy of Windows, therefore it is not yours.

instead of him giving me money I asked him to give me some music on my HD for payment.

Just out of curiosity - how does one equate the value of this? 20 songs per mile? In my instance, I had a dollar amount that I could spend - so even though I didn't have cash in my hands, I was still spending money on my own legally obtained media.

I've gotten music from I tunes and other such sights.

As long as your obtaining it legally, it doesn't matter where you get it from.

My partner got some music from a site and I payed him for some of that music. He paid for it himself and he let me get some of it. So that's how I've gotten music over the years.

Unless two copies of the media were purchased, one for you and one for him, then this is illegal.

I was thinking of joining a music subscription service but haven't yet.

I suggest you do this immediately.

I just like being able to get different styles of music from different places.

The record pools have all varieties of music

I was told such sights will limit you and they don't give you everything.

They limit you to what they have. They cannot give you something they don't have or that is illegal for them to distribute. Some here belong to many record pools .. to cover ALL bases. This also allows them to have the variety you speak of.
________________________________________________________________________

Anything below here has nothing to do with how you got your music - nor is it relevant to the story.

My only comment here is that you're not authorized to manufacture, copy, sell or distribute said music .. so this person should NOT have one of your CD's. Stating that you gave it to her for him to play tells me that you planned that, which causes even more issues.

The owner decided if I could make him 1k on Saturday night he would pay me $250.00 which is really great money for a DJ in a bar around here. I never got the gig. God was looking out for me. She told me she was in there another night when some guys came in the bar to rob the bar. She said they shot the bartender. If he removed all the illegal music he would have nothing to play.

Mix thank you for answering and now I ask that you never call yourself a professional DJ again. True professional DJ's do not use pirated/illegal music. Instead we spend hundreds of dollars a month on music so we have the tools we need to do our jobs. I hope the next meeting you attend at your local DJ Association, that they ask you not to return. You are nothing more than a bottom feeder who thinks he is a good DJ. Time for you to accept the truth and that is you are just not as good as you think you are. IF you were some great DJ worth any amount of money you would not have issues getting work and making a real business for yourself. Instead all you do is take low paying jobs and talk about how great you are. Hell you don't even get a lot of low paying jobs.

Please continue to entertain us with your stories but make no mistake no one here or on any other board has once ounce of respect for you or cares about your opinions one bit. Also since you are in AA you should know that the first thing you had to do was admit you had a problem. Well now it is time to admit that you are just not that good.

Raked? He admitted some faults and we're trying to show him how to do it properly.

maybe i missed something but if you are in AA what are you doing playing in a bar

I get where you're going with this .. but just for arguments sake, does AA not allow you to perform around alcohol? If so, are the majority of your events without alcohol?

Interesting thought, I'll open a poll.

Very interesting revelations here, Mix. Perhaps it would be in your best interest to "purge" your DJ Laptop and External HD of those tracks that were not legally acquired (ittiger explained it very well). Keep them for your "own" personal pleasure. The remaining tracks on your external and internal laptop "should be legal" by definition explained to your within this thread.

By the way, if you use CD that were "bootlegged" or "copied" from your illegally gotten tracks they TOO are illegal for professional use.

Remember, a subscription service usually requires an advance deposit (usually two month) at the time of signing up. You may have to enter into a "contract" with the subscription service for a minimum of one year. And, you will have that monthly subscription payment due regularly. Top Hits will do a month to month subscription and allow you to use their "daily" download service (End of month you get a consolidated MP3).

It doesn't help to continually keep pounding your thumb by posting personal information that others will undoubtedly "bash" you.

Stay focused.

Good luck and start the New Year with a clean and legal slate.

I think it was good he posted it. We did ask him where he got all his music. He answered. I can't fault him for that. As with various other posts, there are those that want to throw daggers (I've tossed a few daggers too) - I'm not in any way defending him nor what he did.

Also, in this case, it doesn't seem that he thinks it is wrong. I can now advise him that anything he has that was not legally obtained, he should get rid of .. and hopefully he will understand it, agree, follow through and learn from this.
