You could be correct...

Maybe I do, maybe I don't, maybe I don't give a hoot...

Perhaps KNut and Mix will explain it to me, while I have a beer and some Chinese food

It's true that your contract is with the client however, the client also has a contract with the venue. Whatever you are doing for your client or is specified in your contract must conform with the contract the client has with venue. If it does not - the liable party is your client not the venue.

You can in fact, be prohibited from playing in any given venue whether the client demands you or not. The legal definition of "blacklisting" requires substantial collusion between venues to keep you out of the marketplace not simply out of their building; much like price fixing.

You also have a professional responsibility to disclose anything in your agreement or service that may present an issue for the client as they proceed forward with the venue or other vendors. You can be held liable where you fail to do so. The most common screw up in this area is DJs who fail to tell anyone they intend to use a fog machine and consequently incur a fine for setting off a false alarm and fire response. Even if the client may be aware - responsibility still falls to you to check with the venue since using a fog machine is subject to local and state fire codes. You are supposed to know the codes that govern the use of whatever gear you are using - so, you usually can't pass that liability along.

With regard to "right ways" of doing things - I think there are certainly clear rights and wrongs - but it's the methods of arriving at them that vary. The "over/under" method of coiling cables is a good example because, it is the way the cable ultimately lays that is "right" - and there are actually 2 or 3 other methods one can use to affect that same result. There are correct and incorrect results - and it seems most of the argument is over the paths people take to get there.

If DJs want to setup in less than desirable layouts and encounter comb filtering, music blasting in their ears etc, then let then knock themselves out, literally!

So why do you persist in beating a dead horse?
If your attitude is "knock yourself out".....then hold your tongue, and let them suffer on their own.
(I know, it's for the newbies. Because you care so much about treating the new guys with respect and dignity)

Mike, I was not directly referring to you. However I will say this, if a DJ almost always appear in Photos up in a corner the majority of the time then I would suspect it is not the Venue's fault that it is either the DJ is not asking for what he wants or does not have the skills for negotiating for what he wants. If it was every once in a while they posted a Gig report being squished in a corner I will agree that yep it may be because of layout or venue's restrictions.

You HAVE directly referred to me about this in a few of my posts. And no matter how I tried to explain that it was a physical limitation of the venue, you simply assumed that I was just putting up with what I was offered. That I didn't know how to negotiate, or that I didn't even try. I believe you used the phrase, "bend over and take it" in one post. I appreciate your agreement in this post. But keep this in mind, before you comment on the next gig log.

I'd still like to know exactly which DJ's show pictures of themselves in a corner the majority of the time.

What makes you so sure that I was referring to you? If it is offensive to you then maybe you are one of those who do that practice. If you are not why even respond.

Let it go Mike. Just let it go brotha. There are much bigger and better fish to look for than this. Just make a mental note of what you do and do not want to partake and share in.

Like you said, why persist in beating a dead horse - sometimes you have to put yourself in a position to not have to deal with the dead horse - which is unfortunate as I see it - because the result is less sharing of information, which is exactly the road we're on.
