Anyone can DJ at any age as long as they are still getting work and are capable of doing it. I guess that's what Brian Redd said too

When it (DJ'ing) becomes a JOB....then i'm going to quit.
I did my last band set-up July 5th...it became a JOB for the 2nd time this year.
Here's why i'm not doing band set-ups anymore https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.601925619841844.1073741837.183426505025093&type=3
And it took me three days to clean the mud and water out of my equipment (and to get my body to quit complaining)

Jim

Its my JOB, but I enjoy my job. I started in the 80's as strictly a club jock and before the 90's I started making the move into mobile.

I've had my share of nasty weather gigs but seriously a mud boggin' event. I would have taken one look at that stage and said "NO WAY". Somebody could have electrocuted in that environment and the promoter would have a lot to answer too. Thanks for the heads up if they need PA in the future. I'll know to pass on this one.:D

I think, that when you get that AARP card, it's pretty much time to hang up the headphones...

You can still pretend to be a groovy person -- but everyone can see through you.

Got my AARP card, and don't pretend to be a groovy person, I just am.;)

Hey Paul
Just to be clear, (and I think you did understand, but for others) when I truly enjoy doing something…then it’s not so much as a “job” then. I “worked” at the local radio station in the mid 60’s (I was 15-16) doing “anything” for no pay!!!! Sometimes the PD would give me the “extra” 45’s the station would have. (Do I need to explain to some of the “youngsters” here what a 45 is and no it’s not a gun!!!) I’m saying this as to explain one of the reasons I became a Mobil Disc Jockey.

The pre-visit to the site didn’t show much of a problem with the water & mud. However during the week of the 4[SUP]th[/SUP], we got rain and more rain. BTW the mud-bogging was on Sat the 6[SUP]th[/SUP]. The band Friday nite was a local band and I personally knew them, and yes it was a “favor” for me to set up.

The wet stage was a problem that was discussed and discussed (and cussed). We had 2 storms to roll thur one at 3:00 pm and at 6:30 pm. The band was to play7:00-11:00, but played 8:30-12:45 (45 minutes past “quite time”…but with the events boss’s ok). Now don’t get me started about the 4-wheelers driving across my cables---that’s another story!!
I really did enjoy myself and helping out the band…but the re-coup time is what is turning this into a “JOB”.

Jim
P.S. the next time I have a wet, rainy outside gig…I now know who to call---Audio One!!! Just kidding. ;)
P.P.S. I now have a lot of FOH equipment for sale.

So being a groovy person is a requirement to be a DJ? Let's see, AARP is for anyone 50 or over. Anyone that uses the word groovy would have to fall into that age group LOL.

Yes, because it is Boss and Neato to both be and use Groovy.

I'd say when you can no longer perform an event effectively, you are too old. The actual number is different for everyone

I think when you don't have hair longer than a quarter inch, you should probably get out of the business, and go sell real estate or be a greeter at Walmart...

If that were the case, I would never have gotten in ... hair is for the weak and the women.

No, I don't believe that to be true.

I still have lots of hair (somewhat gray I will admit).

I think when you take away a man's hair -- you take away part of his soul.

Only if you let them ...

I just turned 55 and have been offered a AARP card and I'm still DJing. It's what I love to do and I'm still damn good at it. I have a friend who is 63 and still doing it also. He also is very good at it. It's a matter of knowing which gigs are right for you so you can shine. You can be in your 20's and suck as a DJ. It's really about how good are you and how much do you love to DJ? I do it because I still love to do it. I guess when I no longer love doing it is when I will quit. Right now I don't see myself quitting just yet.

Mix, you can talk up all you want.

What I am curious about, is why in all your pics, is yer head hanging off to the side....

Show us a video of you doing your gig. I don't care to see random people dancing --I want to see you in action.

{RANT}

"Hey, Mister/Madam 30 year old DJ, tell me what's it's like DJing at 70?" Seriously? That's the most intelligent question one can ask about the business?

Swear to God, there are five posts a year on fifteen forums and facebook groups about age and DJing, and the mob still doesn't get it.

Hasn't the collective figured out yet it's about talent, passion, career plan, audience appeal, and health? No matter what age one might be right now, 18 to 118, if they don't possess all five, what does it matter to anyone else?

Get there age wise, then tell me how you did it. Don't spend too much time, though. No one will listen.

How about a topic that doesn't concern the need to own a crystal ball?
