Who here is using a live text software/program at school dances? What app are you using? Thinking about doing this for my school dance since nobody in my are does.

Thanks!

There is something built into VDJ...I've not used it.

My 'concern' is how do you let them know to text you?

I suppose have biz cards printed up and hand them out?

The twitter hashtag might be easier. making them type your name over and over..good marketing! LOL

I have a wedding this saturday..in the boonies..a good test assuming cell phones will even work there. (it's very out there).

I guess I could give it a test run...somewhere I have a twitter account..LOL..print something up and leave them on the tables ""Want to request a song?Just XXXX" and see what kind of nightmare I create for myself! LOL

But for school dances..that would rock!

Seems pretty all inclusive...

The way I do it to put the text number at the top of the screen. Tigg was right, mine is a homemade program, nothing fancy. I believe there are some more slick, commercial options at this point. One thing's for certain, do NOT use anything that just lets the message go to the screen automatically. Those messages better go to the DJ first for screening.

I thought about doing this a couple of years ago and decided not to do it. But when I was planning to do it, I did not want to use my cell phone or business number because once you give it out to that many people, you could get unrelated and/or unwanted texts any time of the day or night. I experimented with using a Google Voice number, which I transferred to an email address, and I connected to a messaging application. It worked fine in my tests using a separate computer from my DJ computer, which I use for lights and video. Of course, ya gotta have an Internet connection; something I just choose not to rely on for the time being.

Google voice is the way to go. I use my phone to connect hotspot, then receive texts on GV.

I have a wedding saturday..in the boonies at a farm, I'm sure no wifi...but I guess I don't

Then you can't do live texting ... only live requests .. they're different things.

Why?
You can text me live right now...no problem. to my phone.
I've not the VDJ thing, but the video says your text or tweet will show up in a folder. this shows up in my laptop.

The only reason I'd need a screen is if I want the dancers/guests to see the texts.

The live texting is meant to show the text in large size on a monitor or projector for the AUDIENCE to see.

yeah, no thanks.
I can see that as being a complete disaster. at any event.

So they req songs..you don't play that song..everyone knows you didn't play a request.
Or they could text bad jokes, tasteless things, etc.

You don't do school dances, do ya?

It's meant for good wishes and such .. and that's why Rick said his system has the messages going to him first (for editing) and then he pushes them on to the part of the app that displays it. Texting for requests is best done with an app that is integrated into the DJ software. Live Texting and Live Pics is for a different need (or want).

I do plenty of school dances, and proms and Live-Pics works great for those. The messages come to the DJ, and only those that shout-outs and pass the smell test get shared with the public (on the screen). Song requests are never seen and the folks that put them in generally are the more shy. They won't hassle you if you don't play their request, unlike the ones that get in your face and demand you play their song next.

As for the service, it's very valuable (from a marketing perspective). I get a fair number of brides who specifically ask about this service and like it very much. It also differentiates you from every other DJ in town.

You don't read very well, do ya?

so...you bring a small ? tv and plumb it to your laptop/comptuer.

What is on it, as in displayed, during the evening?
Where do you place/mount it?

You've menitoned live pics before..I assume a camera (and person?) are taking pics that are then displayed on teh screen. I did this at a bridal show years ago, so I get the how for the most part.

So do they have to buy 'live pics' to get the deal on the screen and requests?

Do you run a monogram on the screen if they don't?

You can run a monogram on screen, if you want. I usually charge $250 for live-pics but more often it helps me up-sell larger packages. The way I do it is I usually start off with photos of the couple, growing up and maybe engagement shots. These roll during dinner. As we get into dancing, the DJ (or photographer if we're doing it) will start rolling live shots into the slideshow. We'll then start removing the older, memory shots. It's a fun add-on and gives you (the DJ) good promo shots for your own use. LivePics is what got us interested in doing photography in the first place.

I love the idea of live pics and texting.
Can ANYONE add pictures to the slide show, or just the photog?
Also, in your honest opinion, is it really possible to do these WELL, without another person on staff?
I have enough trouble concentrating on the music, then add lighting (something MORE than just sound-active)...
and at that point, there is no way I could ALSO be screening texts and fiddling with pics.
