Looks like I will be needing to buy another external hard drive. My main hard drive worked fine yesterday and today I go to the basement to make another CD for my trip on Tuesday. I turn everything on and my hard drive doesn't come up on VDJ. I hook up my backup and it works fine.

So it looks like next month I will be buying another hard drive. Personally I like the real small ones I can carry in my laptop bag. All I can say is DAMN!

Hard drives crash, PC's break... unfortunately, just a fact of life in the 21st century. I just got a call from my 86 year old father-in-law, stating his computer was "DEAD", and would not turn on. I ran (drove) over to their house, and sure enough, it was dead. I suspected the power supply had failed, so I brought the computer home to replace it. I rummaged through my computer parts and found a power supply, but after opening up the case, I realized it lacked the right main power connector for the motherboard in their computer. Before going to look for another power supply, I noticed the power button had been pushed out of its bracket, so pushing the button on the outside of the case would have had no affect. I pushed the button, and it fired right up. Fixed the power button to prevent a recurrence of this problem. Turns out, their power had gone out, which caused the computer to go down, and when they tried to push the power button, it must have popped out of its bracket without turning on the computer. Easy fix this time.[emoji4] Coincidentally, I was just over there last Wednesday and got a backup of their documents, telling them "all computers will eventually die" if used continuously for a long time. You don't have to be a prophet to predict that, but the timing was a little creepy.[emoji1]

I just found it strange that the hard drive worked fine one day and the next day nothing. It was just sitting on my laptop stand in my case and wasn't moved at all.

Steve you're the man. What deals on external hard drives are coming up next month? Only interested in a small hard drive.

Nothing to do but get another hard drive. UGH. Will look for one next month.

So... if you're using your backup hard drive, and you aren't going to buy another drive until next month, how are you going to backup your music until then? If all you have is your backup, what happens if it crashes too?

Actually you should also have your stuff backed up online or at least have another backup drive stored at a different location other than house. After Sandy I ran into people who lost everything, computers, backup drives because it was all in their house. Their house floored. once it's gone its gone, Music can be replaced bu they also lost all their photos both digital & hard copy.

I have a big paranoia about that. I have backups at a couple of locations just in case

Did you check to see if your hard drive is recognized by file explorer or device manager on your computer? It could just be an error with VDJ recognizing the drive due to a corrupt or change in the database and you may just need to add that drive again within VDJ.

Thanks. I will call my partner today just to see. He put it on his and nothing either.

Also depending on what kind of external hard drive it is, try swapping with a different USB cable if it is detachable (not hard wired). Sometimes the hard drive enclosures go bad also, but the actual hard drive is still good and you can work around using the drive without using the original enclosure.

Any of the lights on the hard drive enclosure turn on?
