This is a pure fluff (as in fluffy frosting!) post, but I have always really liked doing cakewalks and always get excited when an event I am doing wants me do one for them. It has never ceased to amaze me how giddy adults and children alike get over winning a cake! (or a pie, bag of candy, cupcakes, slice of cake, whatever..).

It is actually sort of depressing to realize that the origins of a cakewalk was part of slavery. I guess most people think of them as something "old fashioned country fair-like" and not rooted in slavery.

I've played a mix of songs for cakewalks, like "Cut The Cake" (AWB) for its funkiness, and "Ooompa Loompa". If it is a Candy Walk, I tend to play "I Want Candy" (Aaron Carter version) or Candy Man (Sammy Davis Jr version). There are plenty of other "non-sweet/cake/candy" songs i've mixed in, but you get the idea.

My next cakewalk I want to play "Cupcake Cafe" by Chris Glenn. My next Candy Walk: "Lollipop" by Mika. I was joking with my friend today that I am going to market solely for "Cake Walk Parties" and start a new trend. *grin*

Again, let me say that I know this is a very fluffy topic, but that doesn't mean that sour negative pickles need to piss their vinegar in it. Keep it happy and upbeat, please! :)

This sounds like fun! Pamela, how many cake walks do you do a year? :sqlaugh:

I've never had one suggest one and I can't imagine what type of event I would do one at but I wish I could!

It kind of reminds me when grocery stores have those special grand opening celebrations and they have big numbered stickers on the floor. They make the announcement to stand on one and I always win!

I wonder if I could convince my next wedding to do a cakewalk?

What the grocery store did is definetely based off a cakewalk. This thread's catalyst was actually a story from a friend in Portland who went to a grocery store grand opening this past weekend and won at a cakewalk. She's a creative and talented person who could make a better cake or pie than the store, but she was THRILLED to death to win at a cakewalk! People are so funny!

I wonder if I could convince my next wedding to do a cakewalk?

I've never done one at a wedding, but I think it would be super fun for the right couple, especially if the DJ played Fred Astaire's "The Wedding Cakewalk" song. (again, with the right couple..i've had some of those types who would appreciate the "gayness" of this song and I mean gay in a non-sexual original definition way).

I haven't done a cakewalk since I left Indiana, but I did quite a few each year there --mostly community events and lots of elementary sock hop/fundraisers. I also did an anti-drug "cakewalk" that gave away bicycles donated by Wal-mart as the big prizes. That was super popular, as it was open to the public. Yikes. I did it for a few years in a row and the last two times, the same family won and the girls were both my students when I taught special needs preschool. I think they believed that I "set it up" for them to win, but I honestly did not!

I've always wanted to create a better way to number the spots.....pastel safety cones that are numbered?

So yeah...it's a bit gay (in a non-sexual original definition way!). Not only do they leave the reception gay, but the bride is lit, too. Ahh, for the days of innocence....

THE WEDDING CAKEWALK
From the film "You'll Never Get Rich (1941)
(Cole Porter)

Martha Tilton (Film Soundtrack) - 1941
Fred Astaire - 1941
Rita Hayworth - 1946

Well, here comes the bride, no less
It's hot stuff, that fluffy dress
I must admit, though she's lit
She looks a bit sweet

No wonder her Romeo
Begins shoutin' "Hidy-ho!"
As his bride starts to stride
To a boogie beat

There's a big increase in marriages
Due to a tune, they say
The Wedding Cakewalk
Is the roundelay

When newlyweds in fancy carriages
Leave the reception gay
The Wedding Cakewalk
Sends them on their way

Pasty choirs in tasty churches
Give it all they,ve got
Prudish old ppreachers on their perches
Say, "A-men, it's hot!"

All those bridal suites at Claridge's
Have radios that play
The Wedding Cakewalk
Night and day!

Alternate 1st verse as recorded by FRED ASTAIRE:

Well, here comes the bride, no less
It's hot stuff, that fluffy dress
From where I sit, I'll admit
She looks a bit sweet
