I don't need to be shown the door, I know where it is.

I agree, being prepared for opportunities is very important. And learning from mistakes is necessary in any business venture. Looking back, I had opportunities that I wasn't prepared for. There turned out to be a lot more to DJing weddings than I realized and my training amounted to shadowing at...

    Anyone still use mirrored balls?

I have one that's just taking up space in my house. Last time I used it was for a 60s party years ago. The venues around here that have one don't have the right kind of lighting to get the effect they're made for. Think 60w white flood light - and they tend to turn it one and leave it on all night.

What makes you stand out as a DJ?

    It's mostly my sore thumb

Are DJ Facades still in style or on their way out?

I don't know what's in style regarding DJ setups since I haven't been keeping up with what other DJs are doing. I used a pretty nice table topper when I was doing weddings. What I didn't like about it (and most facades) is that it was too high. Facades are supposed to cover up wires and any...

Would you DJ a wedding for $550 in 2021?

At the end of 2019 (before the pandemic) I decided not to do weddings anymore. I'd rather do events with shorter hours and less planning for less money now days. So a 4 hour wedding with a minimal rig, no planning, short drive, no stress would be OK with me at $550. I had my first DJ event...

    Another off topic thread.

I've been using a HP Laserjet 1012 for over 10 years. You can load a ton of paper into it and the toner lasts forever unless you do a lot of printing. It uses black toner so there isn't the hassle of worrying about the CYMK (colors) running out of ink. Works great for contracts and other B&W...

    Budget mixer choice

According to the two you're considering it looks like you want a DJ (2 channel) mixer. Gemini has several DJ mixers to choose from as low as $50. Compare features between models to make your decision.

How many of you are quitting the business and if so why?

I've been taking less events over the last few years and decided to do very little DJing this year. That decision was made before the pandemic put things to a halt. I bought a small car with good gas mileage in February and sold my Van a week later. I'm still able to do small events but due to...

    Mirror balls?

There's a venue in my area that acquired an old, large MB from a former dance hall in Chicago. Last I knew, they were using ineffective lights and a fast motor - unfortunately. They also left it on all night instead of just using it for slow songs. The MB itself was neat to look at, but come on man!

    Gibson sells off brands

Interesting to hear what's going on with Gibson and these other companies. Gibson was originally in my home town, Kalamazoo, MI. My grandfather worked there in the early 1900s.

How did you come up with your prices for events?

I have a partner now and I let her set prices for events that come thru her connections. I always charged an extra $100 for each overtime hour. But with inflation I should raise that amount.

    VDJ 2021

I'm thinking Atomix is just covering their behind since 7 isn't supported anymore. 24 GB of Ram? Oh my!

    VDJ 2021

Sawdust, installing will write over version 8. If you still have older versions on your PC they won't be overwritten. Between this new feature and the recording feature I'm putting together a mashup on an older imac. I'm just wondering if the quality would be better with more processing power...

    XLR Cables

I had a Monoprice cable that didn't last more than a few weeks because the little screw fell out. That caused the connection to go out. OTOH, I have a ProCo cable that I've been using for 35 years.
